I always start scrounging after I start burning each year mainly because my staging area is close to where we throw a large Halloween party. I saw a CL ad last Saturday and here is what I got. All red oak. I figure almost 2 cords. It is hard to see but the pile is about 10 feet wide until the last couple large rounds plus I still had some on my truck. BTW I didn't have to cut a thing and the guys cutting the tree did most of the loading.
I don't split them sitting down that is for sure. Last time I had stuff this big I rolled them and flopped them down hoping they would land on the foot of the splitter. Then I use a steel bar to separate into two pieces and just work them from there. It ain't easy but there are a lot of nice splits in each of those babies.
Even having a log lift to use, since I do most of my splitting by myself, I would noodle those larger rounds in half or thirds before splitting. Much easier to handle.
