Hey guys and gals just wondering if one of you could tell me what kind of wood this is? Just cut today I'm in northeast Arkansas.
Just doesn't look quite right to be cottonwood aside from the orange. Here's a load of cottonwood I had. Bark seems chunkier with mine
I think the first tree is Chestnut Oak. Thick bark, whitish sapwood, heartwood that is, well, oaky in color. I can't see the end well enough to see medullary rays, but I bet they are there. The second set of photos that are identified as Cottonwood don't look like Cottonwood to me. Cottonwood should be white all the way through, but the wood in the photo is orange. I think the second pile of logs is Sassafras.
You may be right on oak. The stump pic looks like it That stack I posted is for sure cottonwood. It was very dead so it was discolored. It was lighter colored in person too
Although the wood seems like it's green tinted. Never seen that on an oak before. Maybe well seasoned is right. Is sassafras greenish usually?
Black Locust is. How was the smell? Sassafras is supposed to smell really good. Black Locust has a somewhat unpleasant smell. Chestnut Oak and Black Locust bark look very similar - I originally mistook the BL trees on my property for Chestnut Oak, until I saw the leaves come in. The stump pics look a lot like BL too. Were there any young shoots coming off the tree? They often have thorns on a BL.
I thought BL was more deeply furrowed, but I don't have any and have only seen pics so I'll defer to those that deal with it more than me
Yep the wood smelled really good almost a sweet smell, the first cut I made I thought wow this wood smells great!
To me freshly split BL smells kind of like Dr. Pepper. I actually like the smell. However, when burning it smells like dirty socks -which I do not enjoy. Never handled sassafras.
If it dries light as a feather, then my vote would be basswood (Linden)...It could be sassafras. Hard to tell from pics, though. Any leaves around?
