That's a good days work and a large pile of ash, how'd you ever find so much of it? White ash I assume?

That's a lot of work Greg. I really like the size of that ash. We don't have much left that is that big but still have a few we'll tackle this winter.

It was all from a single tree

Friend called and I was able to get him hooked with an arborist as it was a huge tree and a technical drop requiring a lot of climbing. Arborist dropped and chipped brush and then we cleaned up wood. Think homeowner saved about a third and we got wood. I think it was white ash but certainly among the biggest we have cut. It wasnt completely dead, but was nearly there. They are dying around here pretty fast. But splits easy, seasons fast and has decent btus, we like it, especially when the price is right!

It's a shame they're dying off. That's all due to the emerald ash borer right?

I thought that it must be. I have 21 acres and a fair amount of ash, many of them dying. PA had a program that they would come out for free and see if there were emerald ash borers present. I had them check some live and some dead trees and even my woodpile that had multiple ash pieces. They did not find a single one. So don't know about this recent tree we cut, but as far as my own property I cant say what is killing them. Thankfully all other species are doing well.

That pile to the left is where all my rounds and basically anything we cut from here to Spring. I will empty my lean to during the season burning, then in the Spring split that pile to refill the lean to for the 2016 winter. I'll post a picture of that pile when the winter is over. This picture below is a few years old, but it sort of tells the story of how I try to start winter. Funny, lean to is 32x8x7 and holds just short of 14 cords since you have to stack around the poles, but the pile to the right once stacked and split would likely not fill it! woodpile.JPG
