I need some extreme motivation. With all the snow and the cold temps., I'm having a hard time with the thought of slogging through 2-3 feet of snow for about 2-3 miles, just to shoot a cow elk. And only if I get lucky. On Sunday. And get it packed out in time to be at work Monday morning. I may be getting soft, but I just don't see it happening this season. Help me out. JB
Boy I'd LOVE to be able to hunt on Sundays... I'd love to be able to hunt an elk, too. I say go for it and use a sick day!!
True. Just don't want to get one down so far back in I have to eat it on-site. Tomorrow will be the decider. If it dumps as much as they're claiming, well.....
An elk is lighter than a cord of firewood. Tastes better too. Won't be any easier next year Guarantee no elk in the freezer hunting from the living room. Being in the great outdoors , getting exercise is always positive. You put in for the cow tag, you gonna waste it ? Want some whine for your pity party ? You havent' left yet ? Get your A$$ moving ! You Aint' getting younger. LOL COME ON MAN ! It'll be fun & an adventure ! Just trying to help LOL
When you are a young man, that doesn't do anything except make the task harder and slower. As we age though.... I know I could not do it now.
Just got my dumb-azz home, and I'm still freezing. No blood on my knife, sad to say but not unexpected. Went in almost 3 miles as the crow flies, snow from below the knee to your crotch. It wasn't easy. And cold. Cut tracks of individual animals (prob. Bulls and Bucks), but no cows. Glassed across the valley and saw a "highway" of tracks heading North. Too cold, too soon, they are heading towards Craig and the wintering grounds. As a plus, I tweaked my knee again and strained a hamstring. Caught my foot in a buried snag and almost went face-first, but held on with the Hammy, but it's paying the price. Next year.
I went hunting in a light dusting today and wasn't exactly comfortable. I can't imagine waist deep snow.
You made a gallant effort. You have to enter a drawing for the cow tags? Hope your knee & hamstring aren't to bad. Got you on the "injury reserve" list for next season. New work out plan Cut & carry firewood to help your recovery You typically hunt in snow country, or is the snow early this year.? Snow shoes or cross country skis ready for next year ?
Yeah, I cut a big deer track, I mean big, and decided to follow it a bit, just to get a glimpse of it if I could. (Love big Mulies) I hit a bad pocket between some deadfall and went in to my waist. I was lucky I didn't break something.
The cow tags were off the "left-over- limited" draw list. There were enough left I picked one up OTC. My first season tag was a draw tag also. 5- days each season. Snow is a given, no matter the season. X-country skis would work in certain locations, snowshoes would've worked today, for the most part.
I watched a butt-hurt 5X5 run across a rock slide in Idaho so fast you'd think he was levitating. (just got his butt kicked by a big 6X6, I watched the whole battle from 60 yrds,- I only had a Deer tag.) They're pretty slinky.
They sometimes have "hot spot" hunts here. Areas where the moose population is high, near highways usually, To reduce road kill. I'll watch for those, maybe get a moose close to a road. Snow machine & sled
