Im looking at a 87 Jeep Comanche with 116000 miles and a blown freeze plug for $800 but I dont know anything about them mechanically and my mechanic buddy says hes never worked on one so he cant really give any advice on it. So Im wondering if any of yall know about these trucks Im going to try and go look at it on Thursday if its still there.

In 1999 I leased a 2000 jeep cherokee. Thank god I bought the maintenance package on my lease, it was a lemon. And expensive to repair. That said I have a relative that owned a comanche that got alot of miles out of them. It was a standard, the only way it would operate was with the rpm's ran high. I still wonder about gas mileage, but for $800 to buy an operational vehicle, plus lic plates and ins will be cheap, I might take the leap too!

if it has the 4.0l, thats a great engine. but there were smaller options that are eh. spwned from the XJ, these are unibody so look closely for rot, not just floorboards and rockers but under the bed as well. will often decay from the inside out. there was a heavy duty option at some point but the base models dont have a particurly impressive payload capacity. now if you could find a J-series truck...

My cousin had one like this, pic is off Internet , and he put close to 200,000 miles on it before the frame rotted out. It had the 4 cyl and manual trans. He loved it.
I'd be more worried about the freeze plug than what kind of truck it is. Did it rot out or did it freeze and Pop out? image.jpg

Seems like short miles for an 87' . If it's just a freeze plug issue and thats the worst of it, it may be worth a try.
Depending on what the rest of the jeep looks like you may want to offer a lower amount with the work you have to do to get it running again. The junker will give someone $350-400 for it just to scrap it out.

Thanks for the replies thats a lot of good stuff there that Ill keep in mind if I go look at it. Theres a few people that have asked about it before me and I found out its not 4x4 so that kind of makes me want to keep looking not that I was looking to begin with this just popped up on one of the local swap sites. Well see if its still available this weekend when I can go look but Im not to sure I want it since its not 4x4.

Not a 4x4! Then why bother. I owned a jeep Cherokee, then gave it to my son. 16 mpg was too much for a small vehical like that. I will tell you I was broad sided by a semi that ripped off a couple doors and the rear axil. I survived with only minor injuries. The jeep was repaired and back on the road. A real tank.

If it's a 2WD then it probably has the AMC 4 banger. It could have the GM 2.8 V6, but that's doubtful. I don't think you could get the 4 liter unless it was 4WD.

87 was before Chrysler bought AMC, so that gets bonus points in my book.
