Looks like you have done this before. I miss that. My pellet stove gets hot but not like the wood stove did. I think I would need to put a pot on, then ck the temp. I'm fairly sure it won't come to a boil. Maybe a slow simmer.

I'm keeping the stove temp down to about 300* for most of the day. The wife is making the veggie pot and I'm making the stew. Her soup will be done about 4pm, my stew will be done about 7pm. Grandma has cooked :chef: "MANY" dinners, soups, stews, breakfasts, baked muffins and God knows what else over the last 25 years. :)

Looks great Dave. I am making one in a dutch oven inside the mud oven in about an hour. I cooked a chicken carcass down with carrots, celery and onions in my pressure cooker for a nice stock to work with. I may make a fresh loaf if I have time. I figure I will use all the stock and have something to dip the bread in. The Castine is cranking, so I should have a nice warm hearth to raise the bread on.

That's awesome Dave, I want to cook something on my woodstove, have never done it before. Ever cook anything inside your woodstove? I was thinking that there would be no reason you couldn't do baked potatoes like you would on a camp fire - esp if you were down to just a coal bed. Do you mainly just cook soups and stews on the top of the stove or have you fried stuff too? Like steak or stir fry or anything?

Oh yea! Thats funny you mentioned the potatoes… done that many times, but forgot them a few times too:eek::rofl: :(! I have a dutch oven and have done roasts, many bacon, sausage and eggs, I have never deepfried anything but have done a few steaks, not many… I don't get the top that hot if I can help it. I keep the old girls steel between 300 and 400. It will cook you out of the house if I get her any hotter . I have a lot of old Revere ware pots, so mostly all day soups and stews during the winter :). Oh, I did do/try bread once, woulnd't advise it on these stoves :p:whistle:
