Just curious. I was hesitant when I was new at burning, but after a few days, I knew it was safe to do. Now its a morning ritual (with coffee) :)

Uhhhh, mine doesn't go out and runs 24/7. If it does go out my house is cold as it is the only heat I have in winter. You need to add another option to your poll ;)

I didn't light or reload the previous stove before bugging out 'cause I didn't trust that stove. That will change once I learn the new IS burn pattern and settings. Gonna frustrate our propane provider but Oh Well...

I haven't bought oil in the three years I've had the house...

I didn't say I hadn't burned any, but I haven't bought any... Wood is "free". not very free when you consider time and money spent on the saw hobby, but the wood is "free" lol I can afford free and it isn't 4+ bucks a gallon in the middle of winter.

I do, this is the first year I'll have enough wood to do it all the time. I'm shooting to keep the furnace completely off as much as possible.

I got up at 5 and was going to go hunting but seeing 14 degrees on the outdoor thermometer changes my mind instead I started drinking coffee and sitting by the stove :D

I already shot my buck so I might just save my doe for gun season. I gotta shoot something this year with my new 45-70;)

Same here regarding oil. Im gone for 12/day. I used to light the stove with only a few very small splits before I would leave in the morning, so when the wife would get up, she would through in big splits on a coal bed, and by the time i'd get home the stove is still warm. Schedules have changed a bit, and now I pack it when I get up and the oil "might" kick in right before I get home from work if its pretty cold out. It is critical that I rake coals forward and throw a round in the back when loading since getting a 10 hr burn cycle with any useful heat is difficult.

Heading to the food store soon. Wishing I had a heated garage. Will start winch & plow install on the grizzly today and split some ash/oak. Might have to build a fire in the yard.:D

I was raised with wood as the only heat source 24/7, so I find these post humorous (no offense). But I can see how a box of fire sitting unattended in your living room would cause concern if you weren't used to it.

I remember my grandparents and others from that generation keeping the toasted unplugged. Maybe toasters were dangerous back then but when I see someone doing that now I ask them if they are afraid the toaster will turn itself on, and if so what about all the other appliances? To me, almost the same concept.

With that said, if you don't have full confidence in the predictability of your stove and some experience backing it up, better to be safe than sorry.
If I were to change to a tube stove (I've never ran one) I wouldn't leave it unattended until I got used to it.

FYI- High temp indicators on your thermometers let you know what was going on while you were away and are easy to make.

Agreed! I didn't see the polling option for 24/7 burning so I didn't vote.
This poll might work a little more towards shoulder season but not for mid january

not to totally derail the thread, but how big is your firebox? When I got mine I couldn't get 8 hour burn times let alone 10-12.. I work and am gone 12-14 hours on a regular basis. My firebox is wide, but not deep and not very tall. I've found that instead of packing it with 3or4 20"-24" logs, I'd get much better burn times packing it with 10-22 12-16" long pieces going from front to back instead of side to side. yesterday I left the house at 4:30am and didn't get home til after 8pm... and there were still a few coals left to easy ignite a few pieces of cherry. before, doing it conventional sideways loading, the brick would have been cold by noon....

I voted all of the above and burn 24/7. My wife is a stay at home momma so anything to pinch Lincoln helps. Since the baffle install I can load and come home to hot coals usually about 10 to 12 hours. If I work over I get her to throw in a few splits to keep some coals in there. She grew up with just a woodstove so she's used to it.

It is not "light" as much as "re-load". At least one stove burns 24/7.

I picked all of the above, but like alot of you the stove only need restarted a few times over the winter. Coals take care of the rest.
