I'm contemplating trading for this older 066, because its owner wants a smaller saw. I've got some very nice smaller saws that might be similar in value, but I'm not sure; I've never so much as handled one of these. I also don't really need a big saw like this, but of course the lure is hard to resist. I'm trying to make a judgement call at a distance because the guy is not exactly nextdoor. Whaddaya think?
Heavy saw, much more so than your 7900. Plus you don't know what is under all the dirt. Looks to have a starter problem, by the fairly new looking starter cord, who knows how long it has been on that floor. Leave it be.
If you could buy it cheap enough,it might be a worthwhile future project. But I would definitely not trade a strong running much newer saw, even a smaller one.
That's what I was wondering, really. The candidates I have for trade are a 10mm 044 that's been completely gone through (and for which I've got a couple of potential buyers anyhow) and a very clean, low-hour MS360, which I've also been intending to sell. The ad that led me to the 066 claims it runs great and needs nothing, but you can see from the pics that it needs a little work on the starter, at least. The plastics look faded and a lot of paint seems to be missing from the recoil. It was advertised as a cash or trade deal, and the seller/trader definitely thinks it's more valuable than it actually is. I texted him for the heck of it a few days ago and at that point he thought he'd be crazy to trade his saw for one of mine. He texted me again a couple hours ago, wanting to make a deal because his ad hadn't gotten the response he expected. I'm not too excited at the prospect, but figured I just don't know enough about 066's to make such a call. Who knows, maybe they shoot rainbows out of their exhausts?
What's his cash offer? Or the trade value he is looking for? It does look worn, but that's not to say it won't be a good runner.. Although a little rough..
He was asking $600, "because flat tops go for $700-$800 online." Needless to say I wasn't going for that. I just looked up his ad and he's edited it to eliminate the cash price entirely. Now the ad just indicates he wants to trade for TWO smaller saws, but I don't think he's so confident it will actually work out that way for him. I've never gotten into the barter thing on Craigslist, and don't have my head wrapped around it at all. I mean, what's wrong with cash? Why muddy the waters with all these pretend values?
Was this the same guy that had the free trees in his yard? The ones hanging over the house, garage, and power lines? "Must be insured to remove for me for free"
Like this clown I noticed here a couple weeks back..... He's even got the stones to say "Walnut Wood is pricey, so this is a great opportunity for both of us." Yeah, just cause he's too cheap to pay for a legitimate tree service, yet thinks everyone else is stupid.... http://desmoines.craigslist.org/zip/4728484797.html
As fun as it would be to bash this guy for being unreasonable, the fact remains that I don't really know enough to recognize a bad deal in this case... at least not with any confidence. I think of the early 066 as a desirable machine, and I'm fairly used to acquiring saws that need some love and attention. FWIW, based on those two pics I would've put the local cash value of his saw around $375, or maybe close to $500 if he were to put it on eBay. Sound about right?
I'd pass too. It's certainly nothing special as 066's, even flat-tops, are not exactly rare. Plus you have a seller who is overly attached to the saw. ($$)
Jon, pass on that saw, it will end up being a pit into which you throw money. Find a clean 288XP or Lite and be happy!
I seen this guys post 2 days ago on this 066. Took it on trades and knows no history from his postings. I sold perfect old flat top woods ported 066 with 32" for $600. So I would look at the 300-400 range. JMO.
I wouldn't let either of the saws you mentioned go for that one. Guy sounds like a pain (wants the spikes, really?), and the saw looks rough
