Well Dave I am sure with all the different designs of the old stoves some smoke more then others, my Nashua had a baffle in it but it was just a basic design, I did not mean to imply a person who has a stove that smokes but uses good burning practices is an idiot. I guess there is some stoves that are truly "smoke dragons".:(

That's not bad at all, normal to have some smoke on start up.

The Ashley has a baffle too. I could get it to burn fairly clean, but it just doesn't compare to the 30 in that regard.
I'm still confuzzled by your Summit situation. I don't know if I'd have had the patience you had to deal with that....and I'm an extremely patient person most of the time.
Unfortunately, there are still way too many folks burning poorly, no matter the stove.:headbang:

Dave, I am not saying my Nashua burns as cleanly as the new stoves but it smokes very little after it gets up to temp, even though the old stoves do not smoke that much when run correctly they are still no where near as "clean" as the EPA stoves.

Same here with the Ashley. Most of the time.
I've thought of putting the Ashley in the shop too, but I may break down at some point and just get a newer stove for that.
I could always do the Ashley, then changeout at some point.

I understood Oldspark. And sometimes flue size, how many turns and many other factors can dictate the performance of a stove. And I'm sure my old girls are not as clean as most of the new stuff, but I make sure I do my part to get them as clean as I can :).

Even though I really like my Drolet I some times wish I would have just kept the Nashua but its in use in the shop so not so bad, the old stoves really work well in a shop.

If it heated OK, why did you change it out? Did it have any issues?

Oh boy, you are bringing back nightmares with that question, it was 30 years old and the posters on Hearth told me how much better the new stoves were then the old ones and all the heat they put out and burnt cleaner. Makes me want to puke because many of those people giving me advice dont know squat especially about the old wood stoves and how to run them. To this day many look down upon the old stoves and think they are saving the world with their new EPA wonders.
Not only did the Nashua heat OK it did it in a house that was not all that tight.
Sorry for the rant but you gave me a flash back .

If you can do as search on Hearth for some of my old posts, they kicked me off for asking too many questions and derailing threads with no warning what so ever.

That's why I do "all" my own research on things and look at the entire box, "as they say" Unless they come up with a stove that one log will last 24hrs and give me 100,000 BTUs, I'm not swapping out my Fisher for nothing.:p

Well finding research that warns you of the pit falls of the new stoves is not easy to come by, it ranges from an idiot trying to burn wet wood in a EPA stove to some one who has an unbiased opinion with good points. So you are left guessing what is what, if I would have bought the Drolet first I would have been much happier, not sure why the Summit is a turd but would like to find out.
Some people get real defensive when you make certain comments about the EPA stoves, Hearth is real bad about that.

IMHO this site is much better then Hearth, I dont feel like you are walking on egg shells when you make a post and we can talk about things we like besides wood stoves.
I dont have to have the same political views as the mods. either.
There is more to life then cutting wood and burning our wood stoves (I think).
Scotty gets a big thumbs up!

I am not quite sure what they want over there, I was told what they had in mind but it sounded more like a game of my football my rules.

Back on the subject. I have posted this on the other place before and probably here too. But I have burned my old buck for over 30 years and in 2011 I got my new little EPA Hampton for the kitchen. I love both of them. They each have their own unique characteristics. When I need a lot of heat the old buck delivers. The Hampton on the other hand does burn very clean and it's easy to do. The buck, well I have burned it clean for over 30 years, it's just a little harder to do. When I cleaned the chimneys this fall I got just a very small cup full from the Hampton. About twice that from the old buck. (It did take me a number of years to figure out how to burn it clean. The Hampton was easy from the start). That was after an entire season. Not too bad I would say. Admittedly, the new EPA's stoves are amazing. But the old stoves have merit too. Like I said I love them both. :)
