Vehicle - Animal Collission Stories

My wife hit a deer with her car last week here in southern NH. The deer have been everywhere lately and I've had a few close encounters myself. She's fine and there was minor damage to the car, a Toyota RAV 4.

Does anyone else have any stories about hitting a deer, moose etc?

 

Grandpa had a run over less than two years where he hit a deer, a pig, a horse, and a cow. His birthday cake one year reflected this.

 

Kind of the same topic someone hit a squirrel in front of my house this morning. Saw it when I took the kids to the bus stop. About 10 minutes after I got back there was a bald eagle standing there. Picked it up and flew off. My 3 year old got to see it so I thought that was cool. I've seen boatloads more deer hit along the road recently. I guess the rut and more people in the woods hunting and trying to finish fattening up has them moving.

I will have to ask grandma. This was back in the 90s. My brother was sleeping in the back seat and got a horse hoof to the face. Or so the story goes.

 

Is that a grand slam?

 

In 1998, a friend and I drove out to Wisconsin to buy his ultralight. On the way back, I think it was Penn or Ohio... there was a fresh dead deer along the hiway, about every 1/4-1/2 mile. We couldn't believe it. Is hunting not allowed or juz too many deer needing a whole lot more hunters?

 

Pennsylvania has a ton of hunters. I thought Ohio had a lot too. Pennsylvania only allows so many doe permits though. We're I live you can travel about 5 miles south into Maryland and shoot umpteen does.

 

My grandma got run over by a.......oh wait that's next month!

My son and I were in NH for some backpacking a few years ago. We stayed at Dolly Copp one night and got up early to hike from Pinkham Notch. On our way up rt 16 at about 5am, just before the entrance to Pinkham Notch, we saw two
adolescent moose in the middle of the road. It was so foggy and quiet that the moose didn't realize we were behind them at first. When they did see us the started to gallop but there were guardrails on either sides of the road, so they ran to the end of the guardrails and finally walked into the woods. It was kinda cool, it lasted for about 3-4 mins.

 

I used to hike in Maine up Baxter State Park way when I was much younger and you'd see them all over the place up there. I came within ten feet of one one time when I was hiking Mt. Katahdin. It was a mother in the middle of the trail grazing on the leaves with a calf. We slowly backed off until we were out of sight and waited until they were done.

 

We also had an encounter with what we thought was a moose on the trail awhile back. We were behind something that was in the trail and I think it got spooked whe it heard us behind it and ran into the woods, but the path it cleared was huge so I'm assuming it was moose.

 

You wanna talk about surreal? It's fairly common to see Moose when you go inland Maine but you don't usually see them on the beach. A few years back there was actually a Moose that made it's way to Long Sands in York and was running up and down the beach.
