I've been way down into the straps when filing and grinding. Sometimes it's the strap behind the tooth I'm filing.
this chain was one that was happy cutting ,and was hand filed ,it self fed nice ,and i got 2 days out of it before some dirt got it ,you can see where i nicked the straps filing ,not all my chains come out as super happy eaters ,but this one did ,here is a few different image angles ,honestly i rarely file a chain ,they get done on the silvey because i wait till i get a bunch dull then sharpen them ,i bring a few chains with me when cutting in case i hit something ,so no need to sharpen in the field while working ,right now i have 10 or so 105 dl chains hanging next to the grinder that need done ,takes 6-8 minutes per chain with the grinder if i check the angles every so often ,make sure my corner is getting lined up ,,if i do 2 a night it is not too bad ,sitting there over an hour sharpening gets boring though
Last pic - i may need glasses, but that camera is certainly playin with my old eyes, looks like a side beak ?? Blew it up to enlarge it, on my phone its not a big screen
Side beak "feels" real sharp.. It's kinda misleading... It cuts ok, but don't last to long, as it can start a "peel" of the chrome layer.. The top beak, however , don't cut as fast, but ain't got anything to hook and start peeling it's chrome either.. Sooooo... Meh... It's early... I need another cup o coffee..
I thought I read last night ( yes I read all 24 pages) that no one could make the gran berg jig work on square filed? that's probably because you need an actual chisel bit jig...not the round jig... I used this for years to convert round to square, or to fix rocked out chains. Now I do it by hand. Not the greatest pics, but you should get the idea
I normally wait till about 3 sharpening to grind the gullets out on a work chain, the one in the pics self Fed real nice, not sure if rakers height is why or cutter shapes
I was cutting soft woods,a lot of wet alder also, that stuff cuts super easy, the main log on the alders was 20-24 inches
Here is how I am holding the file. I try to keep the corner in of the file in the corner of the tooth, I slipped a little when I took the picture.
I use my other hand to hold the tooth when it's on the bar. Tighten the chain so it won't rock much and it's easier to file.
I try to hold the tooth and let the file ride against my finger to help steady the file about like you did that video. I just needed a 3rd hand to do all of that and take a picture.
I am going to run it on my pole saw. I adapted a 16" bar onto it and have some limbs to cut. Maybe today, if not tomorrow !! I still have to look at the rakers, and make that gullet work.
