Like some help on this one Please. When it comes to electronics I'm a bit out of my league so heres my question? I've been out of the loop for years about CB radios and I was considering putting one in my truck, and my reason is some places I go to ride my ATV or cut wood, I loose cell coverage. God forbid someone, "or me" get sick or hurt, I'd like to have some form of communication. I've tried to read as much reviews on these radios as I can, and "none" of them are what I would call bad...... So whats your thought's? Are they much different? Any CB guru's out there? Maybe some antenna advise also... Thanks all.
Back in the day Cobra was awesome, pioneer and midland too. I had an old president 23 channel that was a real communicator! I would check resale stores for any quality models before spending a wad of cash.
I happen to be in Radio shack getting a battery and saw a Cobra model 29 on clearance at $90.00, I thought about getting it but I figured I would shop around first.
I have three cobra 29 classics from my driving days they're very good radios. Take em to a cb shop get them modded lol for two antenna setup. You won't regret it! Cbad
If your going for emergency use ham is better. You need a license to legally use one, but no one has ever been prosecuted in the USA using it for emergency use. I have a baofeng UV-5, cost is about $50ish and the really work well, license exam is something you can pass in a evening of studies. YMMV
washinton is very good but look in copper electronics there are a lot side bands and what not to and they are easy to convert to many more channels you can convert a washington but it takes a lot of wire and switches i run an icom myself
The CB radio world is not what it used to be. I don't even keep mine in the truck anymore. Channel 9 monitoring is spotty, and you need a good setup to get any range. +1 on the ham.
One area we go with the ATV's is about 6 miles in the woods, I figured I'd at least be able to get "someone" in a pinch, our cell phones don't work for crap back there. I'm gonna look at the "Ham" stuff also now… I just thought that stuff was "much" more expensive.
Learn new things every day. Check ebay get a programming cable, free software will get you all set up for under $50 buy a second one and you are good for 10+ mile range without repeaters in hand held units, access a repeater and you can bounce hundreds of miles.
