Well as promised a few weeks ago (sorry 'life' got in the way!) here's a few pics etc. of my/our set up when it comes the heating our home! By way of a tad of background I work for a Grounds/Landscape Maintenance company in Bristol, England so have a fairly steady trickle of wood coming from our daily operations most is fairly small as we don't do much felling &/or climbing, but more trimming/shaping/pruning etc. which is why you will find a huge variety of species and some weird & wonderful shapes & sizes!!!!! (Scroungers can't be choosers hey?) Here's a pile of logs waiting to be C/S/S:- Here's the log shed being filled:- Some saws for your viewing pleasure! (One's mine the others belong to various buddies..............) My 7kW Town & Country (sorry for all the metric stuff - it's where I come from!) My fireside log storage (the 'shine' on the logs is due to a torential downpour that occured whilst taking logs from my rack by the side of the house into the house...........!!!!) Just to prove the old girl gets used The compulsory pallet fire when c/s/s'ing.............! A bit of C waiting to be S & S'd Any way all - have a good 'un, keep safe, sorry in advance for any funny expressions I might use in the future and thanks for the AWESOME forum!!
Welcome - nice pics - expressions run both ways so no problem there. Getting cooler here neg. 6 degs C
What? England using metric. What is this world coming too? Welcome z1ts. Looks like you have to cut the wood in pretty short lengths. So with that, you will use the saw a lot more but I'll bet you still get some good fires going. As for the wood, we get what is available and be happy with it. The biggest thing is to get it in time so that is dries nicely. More heat from dry wood so less work too.
Yes wood is cut a little short - we have a couple of stoves running off the hoard (BIL, dad etc.) and some are diddly stoves to say the least!!! The other thing I forgot to mention is my wood hauler:- Nissan Navara (I think you call it a Frontier or something funny!) on '08 plate, 55k miles on the clock - top spec Aventura spec: SatNav, leather, elec everything, bluetooth, cruise control, crew cab, elec Pace-Edwards (there's a name you'll recognise) Bedlocker, alloys etc. etc. Will bung up a pic in a bit!
Welcome to the forums, glad to have you! Nice set-up you have there, we're a world apart but you basically do it the same as us on the other side of the pond.......
Welcome to FHC. Always neat to see how others do it, a little different but still so similar. Nice saws FHC is getting pretty global
I've travelled a fair bit around the globe in my (fairly short) life and one thing that I really noticed when I get back home is just how totally mixed up the UK is when it comes to the Metric vs Imperial thing!!! For example I buy my petrol (gas) in litres but my car tells me how slow (or fast ) I'm going in miles and gives me my fuel consumption in miles per gallon!!!!!! And I go to B&Q to buy an 8' x 4' sheet of 12mm ply!!!!!!!!!! At least in Europe they are 100% metric and look at you blankly when you ask them how many miles away something is! And on the same note when you go to the good 'ole US they are 100% Imperial and can't grasp a metre whether it be kilo, milli, centi or other!!!! At least you're consistent is what I 'wood' say!!!!
I wouldn't mind metrics so much if the darn Chicom consortium would actually use a standard. As it stands now now there is the euro version and the Chicom version( which is like hand grenades- close counts).
The formal definitions for our units of measurement basically all reference metric units. For example, the US uses the "international foot" which is defined as exactly 0.3048 meters. It's a crazy mixed up world!
Welcome Zits! Man, you seem to be short on saws, maybe you should purchase one or two more just to be safe! My wife and I spent a few days in your fair city a while back We were bicycling from London to Avon, Bath, Bristol then crossing that crazy windy bridge and on to Cardiff for a tour of Wales. We had a great time exploring Bristol and enjoying the many local haunts. I hope you enjoy this site as much as the rest of us crazy people. A lot of good information here; and it's always cool to hear how things are done in other parts of the world. And if you ever get to this side of the Atlantic look us up! We'd like to return some of the fun and kindness we received while traveling in England.
Hi z1ts. I have an acquaintance in england. We tried to skype once and neither of us could understand eachother But we do just fine with typing to communicate. I learned "brilliant" , "blasted", and a few others. No worries
Welcome to FHC. Starting to get an international feel around here! I'm really enjoying seeing how people in different parts of the world burn. What football club do you support?
