So I have a chance to buy a brand new Solo 681, but I want to know if the guy is way out of line with his pricing... Anybody have a good idea what it might be worth?

I'll tell you what he told me after I get a few responses. :p

There is a 665 on Amazon for nearly $900 IIRC. Plus a $300+ top end kit and you have yourself a 681 for $1200 or so. Unless your contact is totally off his rocker, you probably are getting a fair shake.

I paid about $850 for mine. $500 + for the 665 and about $300 for the 681 top end kit.

I will say, they are impressive saws. Mine has zero time on the new top end, and it is a screamer. I ran the 385 I have today that is plenty broken in, and the stopwatch times are very similar. Both pull about 3 seconds in the Cant.

KilliansRedLeo or Cut4fun may have a better idea.

With the known crank problems I wouldn't pay more than $725 since you can get a new 7900 for that.

I hope those problems don't surface for me or JRSDWS but they are pretty solid runners, and that's with almost no run time on the new top end.

The ones that had problems were run commercially or ported pretty hot.

I already have a 7900 ported by Randy... And I've probably got $850 in it. :saw:

The guy with the 681 actually has two of them, a brand new one and a slightly used one. He wants $1200 for one, $1000 for the other, or $2000 for both!

I thought no way could they be worth that much, but it couldn't hurt to ask!

He could keep them for that. Maybe $1500 for the pair.

Thats my IMO too on what they are worth.

Just depends on the buyer what it is worth to them IMO. I knew about the cranks and already had owned a solo and new about getting parts. Its not as easy.

Those saws arent worth that. No where close. Maybe bc they arent in production anymore there may command a little more premium. I sold my 665 partly bc of the weight and potential parts issue. It weighed nearly what my Mastermind ported 288xp does... and I dont see a 665 or 681 wanting no part of that saw. When KRl offered them a $479 plus ship they were a good deal, but if you add the $300pc kit and then another $300 port job your at $1050. And then you have the crank issues to worry about... and getting parts. I called Solo direct and couldnt even order an extra filter. So I sold mine without ever opening it.
Clint, you would be far better off buying a 390xp for $875-900 thru Brad Snellings contact or ordering a 2188 thru Wicked worksaw. I believe you can get a ported 2188 for $1050 or so (havent looked in a bit).
