With an extra hour of day today I got the dogs out and let my bride sleep in. After our customary donut run (for the dogs not me) I decided to reset couple of my pallets to line up better with some other ones and put them on a better base. When I began using pallets I threw some scrap treated 1x4 under them to get them elevated a little. Since then I came across a big stockpile of old treated landscape timbers (from a local golf course). The pallets in the foreground are already sitting on timbers. The far pallets hold some linden and silver maple that will end up being next years shoulder wood. Here is the timbers laid and ready for the pallets. Restacked the old wood and stacked the new silver maple splits. Cribbing the far end instead of using t-posts.
Better air flow too! + With the pallets lifted, they should last several more years. Stack looks like some real dry, mixed wood types. (some maple in there ? ) Get the rest split & stacked up, winters's coming fast You having a daily fire now?
Yes...no more dirt and moisture (from the ground) on the pallets! Mainly silver maple and linden. Been having fires each night for past few days...still warm during days so the wood stacks are still looking almost untouched.
Yep, pallets will last a long time if you jack them up, the square iron that I came across for stringers is the schnitz. I think that extra bit of lift above the ground helps with the drying also
I put some landscape cloth under the pallets. help with moisture & prevents the weeds & grass out. Lanscape staple hold it down t & I can mow over the edges. (Being black ,it absorbs solar heat, the heat radiates up & helps dry the wood )
