Hey Fellas - finally found the new forum. Anyways tried to get the old Snapper running this morning to suck up the leaves and it ran for ~2mins sputtered and quit. After pulling all the safety cutouts getting spark etc. decided to pull the filter - fired right up ran ~1min and turned my head to see oil sputtering out the crankcase vent, fortunately the thing didn't burn down in the driveway I plan on pulling the carb and checking for stuck float, the oil is at normal level now - not sure if a I'm getting gas in there or not. Any other ideas?
well the oil drained out like thin gas. Pulled bowl checked float reassembled refilled oil and she's purring like a kitten. feel like Forest Gump - my big azz on that little Snapper
You should be able to smell gas in the oil if that's what happened. Sounds like you're good to go now however!
I got the mower for free from a coworker who rarely if ever maintains his equipment. The filter was plugged from the oil/gas soaking it from the clean side. It ran like a top for the short period it took to vacuum up the leaves, I'll see how it is when I crank it up tomorrow. FWIW the bag attachment has a date code of 1992. The "drive wheel" sort-of clutch plate is worn and I debate about buying a new belt as opposed to just slipping back into place when it jumps off everytime I shut it down. Just another free piece of junk that does what it is intended to do - suck up some leaves and become a future powerplant for some odd ball project
Yep a stuck float will empty the gas tank right into the oil sump. Seen some cases so bad unit was hydro locked.
