Rather than buy a $300 hydraulic splitter to split all my uglies, and stumps, and Y-pieces, I went out and bought a $10 diamond/grenade style splitting wedge I was skeptical, but I have to say how much I love it. First, it's actually quieter than the other wedges I've been using. The clanging sound is much duller, which keeps the neighbors happy. The small point drives in and stays in much easier, it's splitting into 3 and 4 pieces, and the top isn't mushrooming the same way as the other wedges.
Those wood grenades work pretty good,I had one years ago.Lost it in deep mud,its buried in Guthrie County someplace...lol
I have one of those, but haven't used it much. I tried it in the big pin oak rounds I had and I didn't work but those things put the hydrolic splitter to the test
I have two of them and they are the best dang wedge I have ever bought ! If you look for the cracks in the round and stick one wedge on each side a couple hits and its busted. We have never had one fly back at us either which is enough to convince me to by another when the time comes.
Those look pretty interesting.................maybe I can give the monster maul a rest and start using an 8lb sledge instead!!! Like Pete said, look for any cracks to start and have at it from there! Still, you have to hit the thing when you swing, at least with the monster maul you only have to be near your target when you hit it.
