This is in our new home, it was a rental for a decade or so. Alot of the house was in disrepair so I assume the woodstove was not maintained as well. It was worse than we thought....We removed the stove that wasn't installed safely.

What else needs to be done? (besides remove the stuff on the floor lol). More metal bristles? Chemicals? Thanks for any opinions.

Ain't any EPA stove there from the pix, mate. It's been running cold, and maybe wet (the fuel, at least.)
Easy "yardstick": if you see smoke, at all, it's not running right. There's always someone downwind, to take it in.
'Bout all I can offer from the evidence.

Looks clean enough to me for what you are working with. I been in a cave just north of Cheyenne that had worse looking stuff hangin from the walls and ceiling.

The finished version of the stove looks great, nice and clean. And boy did the before pics look bad, poor stove was covered in buildup. Someone was burning green in that stove or a combination of green and no no's.
I can imagine what the flue looked like before the sweep came.
In your stove, now that it's all scrubbed clean, I would check seams for cracked or missing sealant and replace any damaged parts. Check the main body of the stove for warps, hairline cracks and rope seals needing replacement.
Looks like your nearly there. Good luck

Are the pictures of the inside of the wood stove? I thought it looked like a fireplace that maybe had a stove inserted into it?

Yep, that's a FP that had a pre EPA slammer installed.
The FP looks clean enough to me. Has the chimney been thoroughly cleaned also? If so, I'd say it's ready for a new stove,block-off plate, insulation and liner.

That's what I thought! In that case it looks great to me and I agree that it's time for a liner block off plate, and new stove!

Thanks! We still need to cut one of the FP tubes to fit the new liner. Time for some new sawzall blades :) The stove & new liner w adapters are on order. Hopefully the local ace carries sheetmetal & Roxul.

Thats one of the reasons we are getting a new insert. Neither of us are able to clean out the old one. Pretty bad, the damper/bypass (the lid flap on top thing) is so coated it cant even close properly. And since its a cat stove alot of its difficult to get to. Cool project for old BK enthusiasts, not right for us at the moment.

I've never seen the old cat models, but it sounds like the current lineup is a lot more user-friendly.

I'd say you are in fine shape for the liner.

Not proud of the the pics :emb: First pic is after we removed the top of the faceplate DSCF1045.JPG DSCF1039.JPG DSCF1040.JPG DSCF1041.JPG Exactly, wood stove inserted into fireplace, but there was no vent. It just blew smoke into the fireplace for who knows how many decades.

Slammer install on the old Blaze King, no need to be ashamed WW, that was just the way it was done, a LOT. I burnt my old insert like that for around 20 years. Had at least one chimney fire that I know of and that one scared me....I got it under control but dropped a liner in after that and did 2 more years with "The Fireboss" before buying my new Buck 91.
