Christmas is coming early to my house this year. I ordered an MS 660 with a 25" bar today. Man dat's gonna be one mean tree eatin' machine! Pictures when it arrives in a few days.
Good for you !!!!! Welcome to FHC ! Don't just get us pictures of the saw sitting pretty, we want to see chips flying in a video !!!!
Awesome! But you should have ordered one from the WNY area! My local dealers keep telling me they're just waiting to sell out of the 660's before they bring in the new 661. It's probably a BS "canned" response though, and they actually don't know when they'll be available.
Stihl won't ship the new model unless the distributor is out of the old one. The 261 was available in some parts of the country 6 months or more before the 260 sold out.
Doesn't seem like the best business decision if it's really true. I'd sell both; drop the price of the old one, and jack the price of the new one until the old ones are gone. Then you can satisfy the guys who want the "latest and greatest", who would probably pay a little more anyway, and the guys just looking for a good deal on a 90cc class saw.
Stihl is good for doing that with everything. I bought a MS660 a few years ago and the factory air filter that it came with did a shockingly BAD job of keeping sawdust out. Stihl released a new filter to correct the problem. I went to my dealer and tried to get one and they then tried to sell me an old style. Told me it was the upgrade and was not. They ended up calling their distribution center and said they couldn't sell replacements until the old ones were gone. Just what I want, trash out a $900.00 saw because you have to use your defective stock up. I ended up getting them through a guy on AS.
although i'm more partial to stihl saws, and in theory their dealer model, stuff like this, that they push on the dealer is bs...
I've never seen Stihl force inferior parts on a dealer. And as for as new saws go, that inventory is largely controlled by the distributor. They choose to sit on the new model until the old ones are gone. That is usually with minor updates like the 261 to the 261C-M and such. USUALLY the outgoing models are available along side the new model, like the 290/291, 250/251, 180/181 and so forth, especially when there is a price difference. The 440 and the 441 were available simultaneously for a good stretch as well. Much of the dealer horror stories that we hear about are matters that start and end in the dealership.
So I goes back to the Stihl dealer and I says: "Why you don't tells me da 661 is out?" He say" "I didn't know it was but I'll checks on it fur ya." Dats when the office manager, Queen Phyllis, shows up. Now, I knows she a Queen cause da sign over her door say "All Hail Phyllis!", which I does ever time I'm dere. So Queen Phyllis say: " Dey gots 34 660's in stock an you ain't ah gonna see no 661 round here till dem 34 660's is gone and dat may not be till da daffodils bloom, so you be a good boy and takes yo new 660 and go outside and play lumberjack and stop buggin' me and my boys! So there you have it folks, the whole poop and nothing but the poop, from Queen Phyllis herself, my area of the mid-west isn't going to see a 661 for a while yet.
I bet it won't take as long to go through those 34 saws as you think. A couple big dealers could get all of them in a week.
