I did turn on the heater this morning to take the chill off of 64F. Temps dropping to 40's over night, probably will be burning soon, not just yet.
I've had five or six fires so far, but now it looks like the stove will be burning for several days straight instead of just chill-buster fires once in a while. Lows in the 40s, highs in the 50s. Supposed to hit freezing a couple nights in a row later in the week.
I have been burning pretty close to the same as you this October. And for me it's easier to put a small shoulder load in the stove than it is to turn the furnace on to take the chill out.
I agree with you. I rather burn wood then oil. Wood is free. Oil by me is around $3.05 right now the cheapest it's been in years. I also have to keep the kids warm so I throw around 5-6 pieces in and it gets the thermostat to 71-72
We have natural gas here and we can definitely afford to heat the house that way if I had to. And as you said, the wood is free and it's my labor and time to get it all prepared for burning. I'm a frugal guy when it comes to certain things and this is one of them. I'll do the same, throw a few splits in and be 74 deg vs turning up the thermostat on the furnace just to be 65 deg.
That's why we bust our butts for all year so we don't have to spend money on the furnace. I hate putting the furnace on
Same as most here; a few fires here and there to take the chill off as needed. Count me in the camp that would rather burn than flip the switch. Cost is a consideration, but honestly I'm itching for any reasonable excuse to start a fire!
I was in the same boat last year, just running the furnace a little bit, "saving" my wood until it got a little colder. This year, I've got a cord of poplar to burn for those chilly nights. Enough to take the chill out, but not too much to drive you out of the house. We've had lows in the 40s for pretty much a couple weeks straight here, so I'm glad I had it. Don't wanna think what it would cost in fuel oil to keep the house at 73 degrees like I have!
We have an old natural gas furnace so I tried to use wood heat as much as possible. We've had about 8 or 9 early morning fire so far including today.
Not sure - gonna find out soon. Probably need a 1/4 tank to supplement the wood heat, for when I'm away from home and can't tend the fire. Nyserda website is quoting an average of $3.60 per gallon. Was over $4 last year. If it's as cheap as it is in your area, I might have to fill the tank!
The weather our way was calling for highs in the low 40's Saturday, lows around freezing. Calling for wet snow out west and north. Looks like I may be mixing in some cord wood with the shoulder stuff over the weekend to see what this new stove can do.
Just 4-5 small fires from scrap so far since late September.Quite warm the past 2 weeks so no fires since. Just 46 with strong gusts right now, only supposed to get to 53 later today.High on Friday -Saturday down to mid-upper 40's,so its getting closer. Scrap Mulberry,White Pine & Walnut burning right now & its getting nice in here.....
I haven't even brought any wood in the garage yet. I've got my heat pump set to 69°, but it's only kicked on a handful of times. With temps reaching the mid 60's° outside during the day, my house is keeping itself pretty warm. I'm planning on letting the heat pump take care of things until daytime temps drop consistently to the 50's°.
Yea had to put the fence up cause the wind froze the draft door and toot out my computer . Hard way to learn but haven't had any more problems since
