What Stihl saw to put a 25" bar on?

ok, keep the help coming guys, we are almost there! Your leading a horse to water, but I (I am the horse) just can't see the water yet!

So it sounds like I should be getting a 25" "Full Skip chain". I assume this chain has 1/2 the number of cutters as normal, right? So there are less cutters digging in the wood at any given time so the saw doesn't have to work so hard, right?

Anyway, where's the best resource to get it, and a good Stihl 25" bar? Anyone here sell em?

Well, that didn't work out so well. As with ebay ("flea bay"?), more times than not the listings these days are inaccurate.... I got the saw today, so I ran out and got some fresh 91 oct fuel, mixed 50 to 1 and filled up the chain oil tank. Set choked and pulled a few times (3 or 4 pulls), nothing, so I tried again and the pull cord came right out of saw. By the looks of it, the rope looked like it had been out several times before... The saw looked brand new in pics, was ok, but not as nice as in the pics for sure.

Ok, so off to find a better saw... next time I'll buy one from here...

It's easy to miss the pop. I never pull more then 2x on full choke with a 361

 

It was warm out, 65 or so, so I put it on 1/2 which should have been fine.... what do you mean "miss the pop"?

Yep, going back. It just did not look right.... I'm kindof anal with my things, keep good care, clean... and I paid a premium for this particular saw because it looked so new / barely used in the pics. Well, as mentioned it was "ok", but didn't quite look as new as it did in the pics, then throw in a "no start", and a "pull cord come out", the cord looked like it's been out before, the allen screws around it's housing looked a bit worn/stripped/used a bit. Worked on? problems? If I had paid the going rate (others are going much cheaper) for a used 361, I'd keep it and deal with it. But at a premium, it should go back. I don't like doing that, but.....

 

The pop mike is referring too is what you hear that tells you to take it off full choke. To start a stihl it's: choke on, pull till it burps, flick choke lever up, pull to start. Give it throttle and it'll go to idle

Did you try to start it without choking it fully?

 

Full ckoke. A couple pulls till it tries to fire. Move to hold choke/fast idle and pull till it starts. Un less it has been recently run you have to choke it even if it is 100 outside. Miss the pop and don't move to half choke and it will flood.

 

Definitely send it back if its condition was misrepresented and you paid a premium for it, but the problem could be something very simple. A new starter rope is about a buck fifty. If the torx screws are too ugly, you can replace those for $10 or so (OEM, including the special one for the brake handle). Any used saw is going to have imperfections, and these don't sound too scary yet.

 

Thanks, exactly what I did. I read the manual before the saw got here, and that's basically what it also says. Also how my Echo works.

The rope itself doesn't bother me, or the screws themselves. But why they look worked... does bother me. Who knows what it's been thru.... Again, if I hadn't paid a premium, it would be ok. But I did so I expected a bit better...
