    :rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol:

Yup, real simple. Just 1 bolt holding them in, unplug 'em, pull 'em out and pop a new one in. Real simple like.

Ask DexterDay how "simple" coil pack replacement is on a modular Ford truck engine......:hair: :zip:

MasterMech these vintage of engines are the ones with the breaking and blowing out spark plugs right?

But with regular change intervals its not a problem right?

It's no joke. Even tho the coils shouldn't be difficult to replace at all, his case resulted in replacing the intake manifold. :(

I've only seen that (the blow-outs) personally on the 6.8L V10, but yes, these engines are notorious for broken plugs. Get the proper tools. It's a 9/16" spark plug socket IIRC. There are a couple guys on this forum who have much more exp. with the modular Fords than me.

Yep.. It runs fine now, but it was not fun and cost a lot of money.

A 10 year old vehicle will have bolts, screws, and nuts that are seized, stripped, and broke off.

My exhaust manifold is next. I keep saying I am going to sell it and buy a new one, but just as I was about to do it the last time, it was an easy fix (after the manifold replacement).

Are you selling any of your current vehicles? If you did, that is more down and will result in a lower monthly payment? What price range are you looking in? My wife has a Chevy Traverse and it is an amazing vehicle. 3rd row seating, decent mileage, etc.. It is basically a mini van, but in an SUV body.

They all were notorious for it. Including the 5.4l (the Expedition used this motor a LOT).. Add in the Coil pack issue, manifold problems because of coil packs, fuel rail, injector seals, etc...

You could not pay me to take another.

Getting rid of the Toy Highlander but its a 2001 and worth around $5k. We have about $10k to spend. There is not really room for a payment regardless.

I know about bolts and nuts stripped. I have welded my share of nuts onto stripped bolts. I have broken a stud in the head of the Saturn when removing the manifold to replace the exhaust manifold gasket. got all new bolts to replace the studs as they were a bit scetchy.

Luckily the studs in the ranger were good but it has had a manifold replaced before. Needed new nuts though.

Yea pretty much most of them have the 5.4L it looks like.

We are a one income family now. Streached thin now...not as thin as when first married but pretty thin.

Lots fewer engine issues with the Chevy LS series engines. In the vintage that you are looking at, I actually can't think of any! Somebody has the dirt tho I'm sure.

I like the Excursions way better than the Expeditions. I am sure the fuel economy is a bit worse but they have a true truck frame and will pull as much as most well set up 3/4 ton truck.

I should have added my buddy has both an excursion and Exedition and has had coil pack issues with both of them.

I have seen the bolts that hold the coil pack down break off down inside the spark plug hole so many times it isn't funny and they are a BEAR to get out!

I honestly don't see the point in SUVs unless you NEED 4WD or tow with it. They aren't all that big on the inside.

I opted for a Sienna minivan. Go ahead and snicker but it gets 24 MPG...has room everywhere...more so than my BILs expedition EL.

I have changed plugs in several mods. I have only seen 1 that the spark plug blew out of and some genius had changed the plugs the week before. I always use a torque wrench on the spark plugs. If you have a 3v mod break the plug loose and spray gum cutter down in the hole. Let it sit some then tighten and loosen the plug until you can get it out. The modular engines are know for their longevity.

Chevy's engines in that era is pretty durable. Had a 5.3 Liter that was pretty stout, especially after the computer chip and cold air intake was added. The only issue that I've really had seen is the transmission. Just check it out, especially with the miles you'll be looking for.

    (me too)

Ever use the 3rd row in a 'Burban? It sucks access wise compared to a van. Little kids, tons of gear, dogs.... van wins everywhere but snow and style. Our Sienna we opted for 2wd but if you need it they have AWD too. I avoided that based on the run flats and figured dedicated snow tires would be better than AWD with stock tires and keep the extra money in my pocket. Friends laugh, so do I, but the thing works, drives like a dream, and is extremely useful for a family or if you need to have 27 cupholders.

We used to load snowblowers into all kinds of vehicles during a snowstorm when folks were buying last minute. Always had to remove the handles and chute to get them in big SUVs but could just walk 'em up and in a minivan. The utility of a van is hard to deny, but, it's still a $&@!ing minivan.

When did GM change the trans from a 4spd to the current 6 spd? For trucks it was '09 up (optional until 2011) but didn't the Tahoe get it earlier? The 6 spd is a MUCH better trans than the old 4 spd and gets better mileage too. That trans is one of my favorite things about my '13 Silverado.
