I have a stainless pipe coming out of the stove and it has discolored quite a bit near the the connection with the stove. I have hit it with an ir gun and never seen anything over 675. I've worked with a lot of stainless in the past and know it's prone to discolor with heat but this looks like crap now. The inside is very clean as far up as I can see. Anyone ever had one? I got the pipe for next to free because someone ordered it but didn't want it. Thoughts? The lighting makes it look worse than it is. The lighter spots near the bottom are a better representation than the really dark side.
Scuff it up, shoot it with some Stove Bright flat black to match the stove. That is what I did to mine.
Unless you're using a highend ir the temps you're getting off stainless probably are unreliable due to the emissivity calibration. And 675 on single wall is roughly 1350 internal which is too hot for my taste.
I just installed the same type (stainless) of pipe. I painted it with Stove Bright Satin Black paint, dries in 10 minutes and matches most stoves... If you scratch it (which is easy to do!), just spray the spot again, and it disappears as soon as the paint dries...
I had my pipe custom made since I had some odd angles, so they painted it black for me. It did not look like they had "buffed" it prior to spraying it. And it showed becauase the paint scratches off real easy, too easy. After I was done installing it, it was scratched all over so I just hit it with the Stove Bright, cleaned it right up. But if I were to it from scratch (no pun intended!), I would buff it a bit with steal wool or something.
