Had an empty trailer this morning, and I couldn't resist. I have a bunch of dead maples in and around a big low spot in the woods. It's still pretty dry right now, but once the snow flies, it's going to be a mud pit until next summer. I had originally planned to get a different one, but this one was slightly bigger, and less rotted. These broken maples rot from the top down. 15" DBH Red Maple. Dead standing at 10am, stacked in the log pile before noon. Landed a few degrees from the planned lay. I didn't compensate enough for the side lean, and it caught the small maple on the way down. Other than that, everything went pretty smoothly. Spent almost as much time picking a path in and out of the woods, as I did dropping and loading up the tree.
That looks like so much fun! I did some big maples this time last year. Well, thanksgiving day actually. It was the highlight of the year!
Maple is similar to birch They get punky pretty quick & tops rot fast. Dead standing birch are usually rotten& useless for firewood. Rotten tops are dangerous, when felling, watch out from above
Well you know, the weekend can be a busy time around here... So I went with the provocative title, hoping to draw more attention...
That's a decent sized Red, Shawn. Most around here start going bad before they get that size. I've got a ton of those to get from SIL's. Title had me a little concerned for second.
Yeah the reds love it here. This one is on the smaller side. I got some real monsters back there - 3 footers fairly common. I only have about 10 decent sized oaks though.
Nice work Shawn! Maple dries out pretty quick too, I've got a Maple to take down at my Mom's sometime this year. Not sure if I'm going to cut it though, I don't mind bucking and cutting once it's on the ground but putting it on the ground is sometimes better left to the pros.
I had that too. Thank goodness my wife was next to me and not a tree.... As always, great work Shawn and be careful out there.
Only on a "wood burning" site could you get away with the title to a post like that!!!!! And have everyone know what you mean........................really mean...............
The one I originally planned to get was pretty far gone - maybe a few solid rounds in the bottom 1/3 of it. I think the way this one broke off, it was still able to shed water, so it hadn't succumbed to fungus yet. Top of it seems pretty dry.
