OK, trying to get a jump on this. Bear with me...
For SuperBowl weekend, I've been informed that we're flying out to Portland, but our destination is a good, small town within a few hours of the airport. We don't have a clue where that should be. All we're after is good seafood and a fun atmosphere for the football game. There will be 4 of us, that's it.
Just looking for some advice right now, thanks in advance. JB

Portland itself is an awful nice city, it is constantly getting "best places to live" type of awards, lots of good restaurants and places to stay/see. It's not going to give you that "small town feel" but it is certainly not a big city. There should be some activity in the "Old Port" part of town surrounding the game. That time of year there is not going to be much activity in the small towns. Freeport (LLBean and shopping) is not far, Old Orchard Beach is very close and a tourist mecca in the summer, Camden/Rockport/Rockland a little further up the coast. I hear Stinny throws a helluva Super Bowl party:) all the way up in Turner.

I've been to Portland for business a couple of times, but I was in and out quick enough to not take notice
of any of the sights. As DaveGunter says, it does come up as a popular place in many reports for places to
live and as a tourist attraction. I think you'll enjoy your time there in February. I'm sure the snow banks will
    be plenty high.

Most of the coastal places will be closed for the season. A "few hours" from the airport could be a good distance, or closer.
Old Orchard will be a ghost town, but there are a few year round B&B's from Scarborough-OOB(Pine Point area) Cape Elizabeth has some nice places as well.
Kennebunkport is a nice area further south ~45mins from the airport.
Or head up downeast all kinds of quaint little towns.

Like Dave said above the Old Port will have some activity - probably lots of college aged drunks :drunk:

I remember always thinking, those guys downstate sure talk funny.

They would say the same to us up north. I loved watching American Logging. They wouldn't even bleep out the swears cause I don't think anyone making the show knew northern Maine Frenglish. Heaha!

My great uncle started Turner Center creamery. He and his wife created the Eskimo pie. A then small company in Mass. , funded by Bordens, did a hostile take over of the creamery. That company today is known as HB Hood.
    Small world isn't it.

Why the he double you going to Portland? Better off going to Naples and skinny dipping in Long Lake then its a short ride to the brew pub and lights out (the stupid bowl is much over rated).

You guy's are killin' me. :D

So, finite suggestions for a small group who want seafood and beer. The SuperBowl is secondary, haven't cared about the game in ...fore ever, but it's a good excuse for us to get together, so tradition now.
