Finally got the NC30 Installed yesterday. Install is up and out through foundation with about a 1" per foot rise in the 3' horizontal run. The outside vertical rise is 18' after the clean out tee. I'm hoping to try a burn in first fire later this afternoon. Obligatory pics to follow.
Looks like you chimney will get buried in snow and ice (if it ever gets cold). Is that cooling going to be enough to affect your draft?
I am going to dig in front of the clean out tee and use some of that dirt to back fill the concrete pier and blocks used to support the chimney. Then build/landscape something around it to protect it. The chimney is on the west side of the house. While it gets the wind, we rarely get any drifting up against the house. Hopefully with the hole extended so the clean out is more accessible and some structure around it, it will be insulated enough to work well?
Looking good! I think the chimney will be fine especially after what you are planning on doing to it.
Looks good, It "might" draft a tad slow on a cold start but once you get that 30 heated up I think you will be good to go
My set up is the same exact way. Never had an issue. The Class A is insulated. You don't feel the heat on the outside of it, so the cold on the outside, will have little to no effect on it. He didn't say in the OP, but this is supplemental for his Pellet furnace (kinda like my set up). It's not a primary. I heat my basement with the 30, then the pellet furnace takes that hot trapped air, and then heats it up more in the heat exchanger of the furnace, then is distributed throughout the house via the registers. (me and Jrsdws talk a lot ) Looks good bro!! Should work great for the intended use. Your wife will love the 85° basement and the warm floors above (of they are hardwood and no insulation in the joists).
Thanks for the replies everyone. First fire is burning now. It lit easily with a quarter Super Cedar and some small dry splits. After a little fiddling around and learning while getting expert advice from Dex, the secondary burn is cranking along well. This was a small load of dry split ash.
The 30 is a very easy stove to run, very forgiving, and a VERY good heater!! You will find yourself in your basement a lot more than normal now.. In time, you may be painting it and making several updates.. To further enjoy your time spent down there lol...
Hope your planned "clean out" works out for you. Don't know that I'd do what you're gonna do. Just saying though!!!
Install and stove look great JR, congrats! I don't think snow against the pipe would be a problem and might even be a good insulator when the temp drops below freezing..
