For here, a 19" birch is big, to be solid is even more rare: Popped apart & split easy, some good cross stacking pieces
In the 30s for me. Coming off 36" plus oak rounds. They stack up real fast when you get over 24". Nice square 6x6s.
Awesome ! Love seeing pics of the "big wood" Normally no need here for a bar over 20" & one that size is fun to split Bet the real big stuff is fun & challenging moving that much weight around
If you are lucky and have a slope to work on you can make it so much easier by using gravity to assist. The big guys are usually pretty happy to go downhill.
White Oak Dec 2013 from tree service contact. 31" to 36" rounds 40-50 splits per.... This pile was 2 rounds, not quite 3/4 pickup load tossed in.
This thing was a big Martha Focker, 38"+ Red Oak, I never got a count on how many splits in one round. And then there was this abomination of a Maple.... I don't think we left any of these rounds intact so hard tellin' how many splits became of each 40"+ monster round.
I split 'em smaller, but this one made me happy. Not the biggest round, but it sure split up nice. Standing dead big leaf maple...
I've gotten a few dozen out of some big red oaks The number of splits is nice, but I don't like working with those monster rounds, hard on the body
We have several birch here that are close to 3ft across and not hollow. Plenty of 20" stuff. 16-18" is perfect for my processor.
This would be my record - I don't know how many splits though. That's an 18" bar & the widest dimension was right at 36". BL to boot.
Look what you started bogydave! Great thread! This was my personal best so far. Red Maple about 26" across, from about 8' up the trunk. Didn't split it though- saving this round for a tabletop slab, and the rest of the trunk for lumber.
Don't know how many splits it yielded but years ago I cut up a red oak for a friend. I could just barely see over the top or the round when it was laying on the ground. It was a mother of a job.
Just came across this post, how ironic because I just posted some work I did the past week and split the stuff yesterday! http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/splittin-some-monster-white-oak.7385/ The lower rounds were hollow but still yielded around 30-40 splits each, but the upper rounds I did yesterday were putting out around 45 splits (around 3x3"-5x5" splits) each!! I love processing the bug stuff, but it's backbreaking work.....definately heats you more than twice!!
