Ghost Flames or whatever they are

So I've got the Fv on cruise control tonight. Cat is glowing nicely with matching orange glow coals in the box. Temp on the stove top is 450 and the cruise control draft is set at 1.

I've got these sporadic "ghost flames" the just appear in the top of the box. they've calmed down now, but a few minutes ago they were fun to watch. it was like unburned gas must be collecting near the top of the box waiting to pass through the cat.. and then poof just enough air, unburned fuel and heat/spark and there's this 3-6 second ghost flame thingy..

just saw another one, although further apart right now.. too cool!

Here's a little flick from one of my first burns.. I should do this again sometime when I'm not being lazy.

I'm going to have to have one of them stoves if it plays music like that....

The Fireview is a handsome stove in just about any setting, but it looks especially good against red brick. More videos are always welcome. Thanks Steve.

 

Thanks guys, ...wow so this is what the fuss is all about! Went to bed at 10:30 last night and the house was at 75 on the far wall of the stove room, 450'F on the stove top. I loaded up and charred the load, with medium splits and mainly softer wood. I don't think I had a split of oak in the bunch, maybe 1. Got up at 6:30 AM to a full bed of coals and the smoldering last remains of a couple of the rear splits.

I put in one of those paperclip max heat markers, for fun. It worked real well. Max heat was 550'F sometime last night.

It was 23'F at the time and got to a low of 22'F sometime earlier. Stirred the coals a bit and brought those last smoldering splits forward, added a few splits and opened it up for 10 mins. Closed her down and now we're cruising at 450'F STT and it's a very comfortable 75F on the far wall of the main room, where I'm sitting with the french roast and the laptop.

..and her's the thing I like the most about this stove, (so far) and that is, it didn't fry us out of the house last night nor is it driving me out of the living room this AM with the heat. It's enough, but not too much. With the old Smoke Dragon, which was a pretty damm big stove, I would come down to coals in the AM, but at the expense of more wood. Also, we sleep in an upstairs loft in the house. The heat reaches us easily and I have a ceiling fan to move the air and prevent all of the heat from collecting up there, but even so, in years past the heat would have us sleeping in a too warm room, but last night it never got too warm, it was just right. The heat isn't overwhelming and doesn't spike to extremes. It got to 550'F peak last night STT and just kept the primary rooms of the house toasty. The rear two rooms are a bit cooler than I'd like. Heat distribution of those will be another topic, but I've got a garage under on that side of the house and using the suggested "push the cold air to the stove and warm air will return" only goes so far.

So far all of the things we really care about are working out really nicely. The stove is beautiful to look at, easy to manage, uses less wood for an overnight burn with plenty of capacity for the much colder nights to come. The heat is better described as warmth. Set it and forget it.

 

I hear you on that old hippie. It sure was nice waking up this morning to a warm house and coming home from work to a still warm house.

 

I have seen something similar to that once.. but not as defined as some of the vids I've seen. I'm sure I will!

I also saw something else today that surprised me a bit. I was looking up through the glass to see if the cat was glowing, and it was, but what I also noticed were flames that looked to be on the other side of the cat. So I was seeing the flames through the orange glow of the cat. I think the flames were coming up the back wall of the stove and somehow behind the cat, is that even possible? Or am I seeing something that just looks like that?

Edit: Thinking about this some more, I'm realizing it must just have been the reflection off the glass. Overlaying the view of the cat.

 

Wow, I haven't seen sporadic ghost flames since the "70s"........................ nice!

Cool song playing along. Shazzam tells me it was: Better Off In Nashvill (Instrumental), by Angela Easterling. A quick search turns up nothing on iTunes, and shows an a limited LP no longer available on Amazon. How do ya get a copy of that? Why the heck would they stop selling an albuam?

 

I know. Originally I had Pandora playing in the background, some similar bluegrass music of Leo Kottke and Chet Atkins etc.. and what happened was Youtube wouldn't let me publish it, and stripped the audio out and then gave me a choice of some similar music. So I think what happened was Youtube in an effort to please people, but not break copyright laws or have to pay fees they must have purchased the rights to some music to let people publish with their videos. I don't know if this always happens, but it has also happened to me when I tried to publish some classic rock playing as background to some motorcycle vids I took.

 

I like to compare the heat off of my fireview to sitting in the sun.

 

Are these the kind of flames you are talking about?

 

It's hard to tell from this pic. but in this pic it looks like you are looking up toward the cat(?). The flames I'm talking about are just gasses turning to flame as it get's up toward the cat and then burning off over the period of a couple/few seconds. That's a different looking cat too, if that is what it is, is that a Fireview?

 

That picture is looking from the bottom up to the cat. I think the stove is a 2005 - 2006 fire view Not sure on the year I would need to read the tag on the back. It was my dads. After he passed away my mom gave it to me and she went with a pellet stove in its place.

 

So it's hard to tell from a still picture what you are getting there, but if those are sporadic "poofs" of flame that happen every 30 seconds or so.. that's whayt I'm talking about. They are fun to watch.

 

Sporeatic poofs mean you are chocking it down just a smidgen more than you should, give it a tiny more air....
