I'm looking for a new splitting axe to use in my basement. The ceilings are too low to use a full size maul. Which I have two. Currently I'm using a cheap 3lb axe from TSC. It's just not heavy enough, plus it's my axe I use to pound wedges in the woods. I'd like something of the same length but with a little more weight. What do you all recommend? The new Husqvarna S2800 looks interesting, but that $100 price tag isn't very appealing.

A Fiskars x-25 is 28". About the same as the husky axe for less than half the price. What I think you really need for inside work under a low ceiling is an inexpensive 5 ton electric, although I have no experience with one.

Estwing makes a small splitting maul. About the size of a 4lb hammer. Dont know if that would work for you or not but it looks nice.

My x25 came today. What a great axe! It's going to work great in the basement. I do believe I'll be getting an x27 for outdoor use. It'll be most used for campfire wood or tree jobs, as I have a 20-ton hydraulic splitter for my main supply of wood.

I'm pulling the trigger. I'm going to order an x27 today I think. After swinging the x25 for a couple days I really want the x27.

You won't regret it. I was splitting by hand the other day and forgot how nice it was.

I had about 6 face cord of rounds, that I never got around to splitting at my wood lot. Well I brought almost 4 of it home the other day. I split maybe half with my splitter, then I recieved my x25 the next day. I haven't started the splitter since. I honestly believe it's just as fast maybe faster with the x25. Other than the few big knotty pieces of maple the x25 performs excellent. I think with the longer handle on the x27, it will be even better!

On straight grained stuff it's definitely faster.

Yep, straight easy splitting wood is much faster to do with an axe than a splitter

I love splitting red oak with my fiskars :axe:

Never seen them side by side, the 27 really is a lot bigger than the 25. I love my 27 :axe:
