In the market for a new insert as of today :picard: I'm inclined to go for the highest BTU's and CFM blowers, but want to spend the least possible.... Aesthetics low on the list.

    thanks for your opinion

Manufacturers BTU numbers are mostly sales hype. Firebox size is where the horsepower comes from. To sustain high BTU's from a small firebox, you will have to reload it very often to maintain the output.
Example: Load a 1.5 cuft stove every 5 hours or a 3 cuft stove every 10 hours, same output (excluding small efficiency differences).

Sage advice!! I will contact manufacturer in the morning. Besides, my husband would rather cut a few big logs instead of several small ones!!

    Thanks!!

Also try to remember to post findings here if others are interested.

Fireplace dimensions will determine how large an insert you can fit. I'm not very familiar with inserts but list your FP size and others will jump in.
Another option may be to place a free standing stove on the hearth and vent through the FP and chimney.

Guessing with the old BK, the fireplace is pretty big. Probably no liner? Do you have a specific budget in mind?

Are you still trying to fix the Blaze King?

Check out the Osburn 2400 and PE Summit. If you could fit an 8" liner, maybe the Buck 91 or Kuma Sequoia.

scratched the painting project for this weekend. Going to pull the old BK instead, to get exact measurements. I am not picky, I will definately consider a freestanding unit! Thanks!

Jeff, we threw in the towel on the old Blaze King. Too much to do to, and not enough man-power/time or expertice. I talked with an acquaintance that has a friend that needs a stove. We shall see, I plan on sending the $200 new cat with it, so I will only send with someone that can actually use it. Thank you for the options to explore, its dizzying googling for a good stove.

I doubt there is a new liner guessing from condition of the rest of the house when we bought it. There is double walled pipe ontop of the chimney, we are wondering if the entire chimney length is the same? Even if there is doublewall pipe all the way up we are going to get a camera down it (now that we saw the condition of the cat:hair:) We need to actually get in there and see, but alot of insert measurements look promising. The newer fireboxes do not seem as deep as this one, but this will not be our primary heat source either, probably only on extremely cold or extremely windy winter days. blaze king.jpg
Though DH love a real fire :fire: Yes, it seems like a large faceplate, ~45" x 34"H. We will also have to figure something out for the blower vent inserts in the wall:doh:

Screen-Shot-2014-02-28-at-12.18.53-PM-1024x248.png We will need some creative thinking for this one, Napolean1402, faceplate ~2" short.

We are exploring less expensive stoves now. Chimney needs relining and all new parts, more $$ :picard:

Opinions on England Stoveworks 50-SNC13I ?

$875 at Ace currently. Would free up some cash for the chimney reline.

LOL! We are at the mercy of pics too, will have to get it shipped in :) I have 1/2 mind to go into debt for another brand :sherlock: must do more investigating.

I am skilled at googling..... Not finding the exact specification on that stove that I need, but the sale is on for awhile more, so I have time. Every doc I found is pretty vague.

    Thanks Stinny:coffee:

The "13" is a very small stove, probably not going to give you what you are looking for. The "30", its big brother is a power house. Not sure if it's made in an insert but it may be more fitting.

If you had a Blazeking in the FP, this should open up lots of options and not limit you to an insert.

Thank you for the reality check! The "13" is not the right one for our situation. The pellet stove and this one are our only heat source, and in an emergency we would need a bigger stove.

Maybe I missed it but what are the details of your house? Square footage, single story, age, amount of insulation, lots of leaky windows, drafty, open floor plan, high ceilings, etc? The big ol' Blazeking and the fact that you're in Wyoming leads me to assume you need lots of firepower.

Would you rather have a free standing stove or an insert? That's a whole other discussion. I prefer a free stander. No blower, noise, electricity necessary (arguably) and usually cheaper. IMO, a stove will heat more efficiently if it's not stuck in a FP. The insert will free up floor space and inserts can be very capable.

If free standing, you need a rear venting stove to run the liner through the FP and up the chimney. All of Woodstock's stoves have reversible flue collars and can be rear vented. There are other brands that offer rear venting models but I don't remember which ones off hand.

If you would prefer an insert, there are lots of options. The Pacific Energy Summit has a good reputation, big insert capable of long burns and lots of BTU's. There are others.....
