Most any brand will work. Stick to 3/16" though. :)

Two things I have found I needed. A 5/16 wheel to grind down rakers and a moisture meter.

Pallet Pete and DexterDay , are you taking down your raker on the grinder? If so how. Video maybe?

I keep hearing references to grinding the raker but not sure how you do it.

Take it to 3.50 on the video and he uses a 5/16 wheel dressed for the rakers.

Ok, here's a question I always have problems with, it seems like they are missing a spec on file size, or cut size on chains. What am I missing?

For any given chain that you know the "normal" specs on, (i.e. Pitch, Gauge, length/link count, and Cutter Type and Shape [Rapid, Super chisel, Micro, Duro, Square...]), how do you know what size FILE to utilize?

So for example, my new Stihl 362c-m w/ 20" bar uses: "33 RS3 72 chain loop". That is according to their chain guide: 3 = 3/8" Pitch, 3 = 0.05 Gauge, R = Stihl Rapid, S = Super(chisel), 72 = 72 links. So how do I know what "file" or cutter size to use?

Ok, thanks. But HOW do you know that? No you personally, but how does one deduct the file size from the chain specs?

So, HOW do you know what size file to use? There must be a way other than looking it up and a manufacturers reference chart, no?

How does one deduct the file size from the chain specs? Can it be done?

Up till now, I basically had one size file and it always worked/fit.

I don't understand what your getting at. I listed the files to use to get the proper hook with about 20% of the file above the top plate.

    File sizes
Large 7/32? - 3/8? pitch chain as well as .404? pitch chain
Large 13/64? – also for 3/8? pitch, but slightly smaller. Recommended on 3/8? Stihl chain.
    Medium 3/16? – .325? pitch chain
Small 5/32? – 3/8? small Low Profile chain, Picco, and 1/4? pitch
    .
    7/32? = 5.5 mm
    13/64? = 5.0 mm
    3/16? = 4.8 mm
    5/32? = 4.0 mm

When you bought the chain. The specs should have been on a paper in the box.

This was a Stihl chain? Correct?

Thanks.... I assume your question marks are supposed be quotes ("), correct?

What I'm trying to ask is this: If I were to go to Joe Blows box store tomorrow and buy a new chain (any brand!), how would I know what file to buy that would work with it, based solely on the specs listed on the box of the chain. They normally don't print on the box: Use 3/8" file with this chain So, how do you normally figure it out? It's just weird to me, that one of the specs for a chain isn't the "Cut size" or "Tooth Size"...., which would be the rounded area of the tooth that the file fits into to sharpen. For example, why don't they simply say: This chain has a 7/32" tooth (or something similar to that)?

It just seems like they are missing a spec on the chains, no? You don't find it weird that you file a 3/8" pitch chain with a 7/32" file? It might be obvious to you guys/professionals/experienced that do it all the time. But for a guy like me, not very experienced at it, picking up the saw a few times a year, and trying to make sure I use the correct file/cutter on the chain is not so obvious. I came to this conclusion when trying to order diamond cutters for my dremel for my new chains, and realized nothing told me what size cutters I needed.

    Make sense?
