Wow.. I literally just got my set for my 036 Pro (doesn't need them per say) about 2 weeks ago and a set for my recent MS 460 acquisition. Pyro - I dont know if it's the hardness, ring end gap, etc. But I know there good for like 10 lbs of added compression. Install with no base gasket (check squish to make sure its o.k.) and you'll see even better gains. Hopefully StihlHead can talk more to the point about the Cabers.
I'm not sure its a question of being "so much better" (better than what?). Rather, I think its more that they are considered "very high quality cast rings matching/exceeding OEM stuff". And the best part is they are dirt-cheap assuming that you are using the vendor in Greece that has been referenced. I've bought 6 or 7 sets from there now at a fraction of what OEM costs. StihlHead turned me on to them some time ago, he can speak more to specifics than I can.
They are stiffer rings is all. Several years ago I noticed that the rings in a 'tired' 026 were really soft when I pulled them off. The piston and cylinder were fine. Obviously the rings were not expanding as well as they should have. I went hunting for rings online, and I just happened onto the guy with Cabers on Ebay in Greece. The 026 really woke up with just the new rings. Since then a ring set is on the list for any saw with high hours on them or saws that I am porting. Ring seal is critical on 2-strokes, and in my moto-cross days I learned to run more oil in the dirt bikes to get better compression. I run my oil at 45:1 for that reason too.
I just got my Cabers for the 460 today. So as soon as I get Swags saw done, my 036 and 460 (used) will be getting a small overhaul and base gasket delete. Looking forward to the GTG at Swags this Spring!!
Does the guy in Greece send them taped to cardboard like that? Every time I've gotten Cabers they've come in a little plastic box that is almost impossible to open without spearing your hand with a screwdriver.
Its very thick cardboard, and I cut the other half. Its inside the 2 halves and it is some of the thickest cardboard I have seen. I can't wait to do the new 460!! Still thinking of sending the 036 Pro to Mastermind (along with the Cabers). It is my favorite saw to run! With a 16" B & C!! Its a beast! Back on track. The kit was shipped back today. Hooe to have a return payment Fri evening. Then a new OEM kit will be installed soon ( at cost, Courtesy of a very fine member) Cant delve to far off track. Someone can start a Caber thread (I will be when the 460 comes apart).
I thought we were following the AS thread model. You know, one page on point followed by 20+ pages of BS while parts are ordered.... So how do you pronounce Caber? Is it K-ber or CAH-ber.
the tractor site is like that i belong to. A few pages to answer the question then a toral new direction for the remaonde pages. i got cabers for my 372 that i was rebuilding back to a runner. ordered them with my stiff from baileys. i think they were the same price as the guy on ebay if no they were only like $1 more. anyway im pretty sure they came in a tiny little box like a seal would come in. like a wheel seal box. i beleive it said vaber on it. if i think i will snap a pix in mourning befor work
Well, after all the problems with the last kit? I finally got another kit today. Thanks to MasterMech What a guy.. And what a packager!! I have packaged a bunch of parts, saws, etc, but never received such a well packaged product. My hat is off to you sir. You definitely took care before sending it. So hopefully, it won't be long now. I'm in the middle of a Huge project in the basement. But will give one evening this Fri or Sat to finishing it.
Yeah, I beefed up Stihls original packaging a bit. I don't trust any of the shipping services farther than I can throw 'em. Glad to help out and certainly looking forward to that saw being reunited with its owner.
Slug and a jug is really no big deal. When they need bottom end work, (bearings, crank, con rod, etc.) the real fun begins. Nice too that the 026 is a simple beast to work on. Some of these new saws are a lot more complex and time-consuming to tear down and work on.
I got so caught up yesterday, I forgot to update this. Here are more pics. I put the 18" bar on and sharpened the chain today. I never ran the compression numbers, but this thing runs good
I sent you the 44mm cyl as opposed to the 44.7 from the MS260. I have heard the 44mm saws ran stronger but never really been able to verify it. I'm starting to like this size saw. I was watching Raphinus run my MS261C-M the other day and you could see/hear it getting stronger as he went. He likes it too, almost too much....
