Hey now! I'm the original here no copy catting! Get it Tom and Jerry! Pete and Repeat... I need another beer!
2 cord + Red Elm css finished it yesterday. click on pic for full view. 36ftlong 5.5 high 17" long splits. It will get moved before or by the first snow fall so the area is open for plowing.
Looks like slippery elm to me!! As for that 12 step chart that Paul bunion had up, do you guys see all the hidden BTU'S in that chart? Every single step warms you up......go ahead and look at it again. FHC addiction......The gift that keeps on giving!! Nice looking crew of helpers there, NYCountry! Firewoodin' is a great family activity!
Here are my helpers ( pic), the more useful ones are opposite sides of the country ( no pics). One in the East was just blessed with twin boys.
Wow! How many trees, and what was the DBH of the biggest? Yeah, I saw a post by nrford saying all the interior trim in his house was Red Elm. According to the BTU charts it's between Black Cherry and White Ash, better than the other Elms (except Rock.) It's not super wood heat wise but I love it anyway....it's real solid and has a beautiful pink hue. There's a lot here but they don't get too big before Dutch Elm gets 'em. The biggest one I've seen so far is standing dead out there, waiting for me. 19" DBH.
Woody, Boy I like that stuff on the trailer- pre dried Stack in picture one tree. Trunk was a little over 30" for some 15ft or so. Maybe it is slippery elm just didn't have the usual slime under the bark, this was green cut. Got to get one of those chain mills, could have gotten some nice boards out of the trunk sections. ( like I have time to fool around with that also)
The only thing that's throwing me is the bark. I just went out and got a pic of a live 'collateral damage' Red I got a few months back. Now, this wood just got rained on....the wood wasn't this dark when I first split it apart. But this bark is very similar to the bark that fell off the 19" dead stander I've got waiting in the woods. Looks different from NY's bark... Yeah, most of the bark-less dead standers are low 20s MC at most. I would think that even a big Red like yours would have that slippery "mucous" under the bark. There are a bunch of different Elms out there, besides just American and Slippery (Red,) and I'm not familiar with the bark of any of them...
I guess from the different areas and climatesthey might be different as you stated. Ill see In a few months what it looks like after it dries a few months
Now *that* is what the elm on my property looks like. The leaves are maybe 3-4" long, and 2-3" wide. When they get just a little bigger than that, the bark starts to take on a "shaggier" appearance. I was thinking American for mine, given the appearance of the bark. I was thinking red for the OP's because of the pics I've seen; which had pretty dark heartwood to them. But then again I've noticed the heartwood of most woods usually seems to fade and blend in more once the wood dries a bit.
