I built carry all for the tractor's and I have 3 slots to hold saws. You slide the bar straight down in and the handle of the saw is pointed up. I also look at a tractor forum and this is how most people on there mount their saw to their tractor so I gave no thought to mounting the saws like this. Well I had the carry all sitting in the garage with some saws on it and I kept smelling gas. Come to find out the gas was leaking out of the saws. It was coming out of the vent. I have seen some pictures on here of you guys hanging your saws by the handle. How do you keep the gas from running out of them...... Are you draining the tank?
For long storage, I drain the tanks. For a couple weeks or so, they set in the shop. Like to add fresh gas to them, even the 1/2 full ones , before starting. If hanging, I'd drain.
I have had minor gas leaks with drastic tempurature changes, same with oil. I don't refill the saws anymore before stowing them. Seems to cut down on the leaking.
Maybe you have a split line? They shouldnt leak but some do because of needed maintenance. Bar oil is a bigger problem for me! Dang leaky earthquakes and huskies!!!
MS 660, MS 441(was full when I put it on the carry all and epmpty when I went to use it), and 034 Super. If you look when some saws are in this position the vent is not at the top of the tank. If the tank is full gas will run out. My saws don't set for a real long period of time with out being used. I leave what gas is in them when I am done. If they have sat a little while I run the gas out before topping off. If they have sat a while I dump the gas and put new in. I'm not sure if the temperature may have had a little something to do with it. No split line.
If the 441 went from full to empty? Then something is happening that shouldn't be happening. That's a lot of fuel to leak out. Is the 441 a Mtronic model? Or carby?
The 441 has a two piece fuel line with the junction under the carb box. (Hidden). That would be the first place I'd look for leaks.
I've not had any of mine leak with a good vent even with the vent down laying on the starter side. I'd check out the vents. You've probably got a bit of dust in there and they're not sealing correctly.
Yes, full to empty. It is a Mtronic model. I'll look. I Put those 3 saws back on the carry all again. They are all full. I'll see what happens again. I have them tore down so I can look at the vents and fuel lines.
My 046 with the 460 tank was leaking out the vent and it needed cleaning. I bought a new one just in case and haven't needed it yet.
No gas leaking, the only problem I have is bar oil dripping on the lower saws (worse in the summer when it gets hot) The little duck bill in the tank should keep fuel from coming out.
Nice collection. It looks like the 034 is only one of these 3 that is leaking. I'll look inside the tank on it. I'm gonna check the 441 and 660 tomorrow and see. I'm thinking since the gas was sitting out in the building it was cold. I gassed the saws up and put them on the carry all. It was warmer in the garage and got warmer as the day went so may the tanks built pressure and leaked out the vent. Maybe when the 441 started leaking it siphoned itself dry.
Pulled the top off the vent and wiped it all clean and put it back together. It's the newer style vent like the 460 tanks.
I run a lot of older saws (041AV Super, 015T's, etc). You can't hang them vertically, they'll leak fuel out of the cap vent. For long term storage (especially if you are stuck using ethanol fuel), draining them is a must.
cutforfun that's absolutely beautiful shop...you've got some awesome saws too.. It's definitely done right...
I just checked the 441 and 660 and they did not leak since last night so I guess they are okay. I cleaned the vent on the 024 and put it on the carry all and it leaked within a few minutes. I'm testing the 170 now. I'm gonna look into the 024 and 034 more on Monday.
My guess is that your problems are as you suspected with the older pre EPA saws when leaks and too much escaping fumes are a no no
