Had 2 cord delivered to dry out for 16-17 and came up about 1/4 cord short! I called the guy and he brought more but didn't agree with my thinking but he still delivered and said he wasn't going to wreck his reputation on it.....I got my way of thinking and he has his and it's all good seeing he saw it my way, so I am happy...

Most of those sellers eyeball it from a huge pile. Once you stack it, you'll know for sure. Good he delivered the rest.

Yup it was all stacked on pallets when I called him, he is a decent guy and I have known him for a long time but never bought wood from him....Still the fact he brought more is good whether he agreed or not....

Maybe this will get him to thinking and doing some measuring.

In his defense I could stack one way and you the other and come up with different amounts. A seller might stack a little more air and a buyer a little less. I stack mine pretty tight so it may be more wood in a cord than a loose stack.

Maybe, but off by 1/8th seems like a lot. The firewood guy around here had his trucks certified by the state as to how much they hold according to the states definitions of a "measured thrown cord" 180 cubic feet for 12-16 inch and 195 for 24 inch. Seems like a good thing to do if your in the firewood business.

Agreed he should not have been an 1/8 off per cord. At least he made good on it whether he agreed or not.

Sounds like a good guy worth doing business with.
He made good on 2 full cords.

Good dry stuff or is it gonna shrink some ?

Made me laugh & think "What do you do if you get more than a cord ? "
    " Return it ? " LOL :)

    Kinda see jetjr 's point,
I stack loose in the seasoning stacks & take more time to stack it tight in the woodshed.

Don't know if an 1/8 is just stacked real loose & it sat & shrunk some as it dried .
I know the shrinkage height in a stack 4' high is noticeable :)
I stack the woodshed tight to the roof & when it's time to use the wood, there's room for another layer or 2.

    Glad it worked out !

That is such a crapshoot I'm very surprised it would be "certified".

I have filled my truck to the "gunwhales" a few times without stacking. After stacking at home I had loads that varied anywhere from just over a cord to close to 1.5 cords.

I stack the wood in the truck when delivering. Can fit more plus I have no worries about shorting someone or giving them way too much.

    Wow 33% variation that's surprising.

It was brand new green wood and he delivered in a dump trailer and I stacked 2 rows 24 ft. per row of 16" wood 4' high, there is no way you can get a cord in the average dump trailer in my opinion but I wasn't here when he delivered and don't know if he had extra in his pickup or not as he came closer than I thought he would all things considered.

It's nice to see that he made good on filling the remainder for you.....I'd say, even if you disagreed and he STILL made good on the deal, he's a good man and worth doing business with again.

As for being "short" or "too much extra", this story reminds me of buying a bag of potato chips nowadays.....the bags have a "sold by weight, not by volume" disclaimer on them. A big bag of chips is around 80% AIR anymore!! Thank God they don't sell firewood like that!!

It's 30% air space and 50% water weight. That leaves 20% for firewood :rofl:

They do in Naine. When my brother buys logs its x lbs, not x cords.

Right where I want to be.
If you do the calc, that's so close to a cord per row, it's probably less than a split short.
    Just sayin'.

If that was the case here, I'd be selling firewood as soon as I cut it down......they'd be buying mostly water!!

    +1
The green birch I've been cutting is real wet, heavy stuff.
Glad I'm paying by the cord.
My PU truck says there's some heavy loads on the trailer, for less than a cord of wood.

Most of the logging is done for mills and most need the wood to not be too dry, so I guess that's the reason on it? I'm not too sure. I know my Dad works at an OSB mill and they soak the aspen logs in a big pond before they are processed.
