Wild, I have the flannel lined jeans and carharts (no fleece) and also the insulated flannel shirt...(seems to be the required dress code up here). One of my favorites is a flannel that mom and Dad gave for my birthday quite a few years ago that is line with the same waffle stitch thermal that longies are made with. Of course, wool shirts are always welcomed! And a good rugged twill is welcomed...not so much for warmth, more for longevity.
Perfect Christmas Gifts! Thanks, the cold wind cuts right through most clothes. Every layer helps. He has fleece lined jeans w cordura from the knees down but does not wear them to work. bigbarf48 thanks for the thread. And yes he will have walmart flannels as well
No problem Wild West. Ive been looking at an llbean maine guide jacket with a wind-liner inside. My carhartt jacket is usually good for cold weather, but does nothing for wind
Dont know how mich they cosy bit was looking at the catalogue a few years ago at work and there crazy priced
Filson is WELL out of my price range for a jacket. Maybe up north they're worth it, but down here I can't justify it
I've got a few of the Walmart flannels. They work good when it's in the 35-50 degree range when you need something light. I got mine at the end of winter clearance for $5 a piece. I have some with the insulated lining I've had for several years. I wear those or a hooded sweatshirt when it gets cooler than flannel by itself will take care of.
That's funny, I just dropped $500 on dog kibble that might last me 3 months...I love second hand clothes... I'll shop at goodwill or gladly pay mom and pop store prices before going to Walmart...Walmart makes me nauseous, I won't shop there...everybody has their priorities I guess.
I also wont shop at walmart if i can avoid it, partially because I believe the cheap prices for poor quality is false economy, partially because I dont care to support their corporate policies (poor wages and all china sourced). On the flip side the amount of money I spend on radio controlled toys some of you might find disgusting, whereas some of you have collection of chainsaws, processing equipment, tractors etc that's probably worth more than my house. We all pick our poisons and have our own priorities.
Where are the electronics in your RC toys made? Do you know the wage structure of the companies that make them? If you buy electronics from overseas, that come from facilities that pay the same wages as the garment factory next door, and you won't buy the clothing, why would you buy the electronics? This is the inconsistencies I mentioned above. I'm not picking on you. Jharkin, you just gave a great example to illustrate my point. The whole cast the first stone thing.
Flannel Sheets - who has them? What's better than a freshly made flannel sheet bed.....maybe a good alibi?
Augie, where was I judging anyone? I just stated what I try and do. And if you must know a lot of the electronics for my RC gear is made in Japan, some in Korea, some is license build in China for Japanse, Korean and US based firms. A couple of the components come from Germany. The engines I used are mostly sourced from Japan, one from the US, one form England. Most of the kits are US produced of a mix of domestic and imported materials, because I shop boutique low volume suppliers. I have no blanket objection to buying Chinese made if the items are high quality and coming from firms that design their own and treat their workforce well. What I dont like to do is buy cheap knockoffs, clones; and in general if I can get US made at good quality for similar or not much more than imported I will try to buy local.
I used to wear the crap out of Wal-mart flannels back in the day. Now I prefer to spend a little more on flannels (but only when I find them on clearance). Right now I only have 3. One is a Columbia, which is really a joke. It's thin, and good for those warmer days I guess but I'm surprised I haven't ripped it yet. Next is a Dakota Grizzly. It's a hoss: thick, warm, and built to last with an extra layer over the elbows. My favorite is an ExOfficio. It's made well and super soft. I try to not do any real work in it, because it looks good enough even after 2 years that I can still wear it in to work or family events. I've been on the lookout to get another Dakota Grizzly or ExOfficio next time I find them under $25.
I agree with Jeremy it is a lifestyle choice, you do what you can, buy local whenever possible, but sometimes you may not have a choice. I can choose not to buy flannel shirts that are sourced in China by Walmart because if I want a flannel shirt there are many options. The electronic equipment I use for tracking my dogs in the backcountry is available from only one place. I need it, won't be without it, so I buy it and if it was made in China then so be it.
But you have no current evidence that Walmart purchases goods from factories with any different labor practices than the RC manufacturers. You mentioned contract manufacturing, then the purchaser knows what the labor conditions are, because they "lease" the assembly line. Walmart purchased made to order goods. Are they responsible for verifying each and every supplier all the way down the production line? RC goods require precious metals, metals that may be mined by children in Asia and Africa, any comment? Im not picking on your, but this goes back to my statement earlier You say you wont buy from Walmart because they support substandard labor practices, that means you think anyone buying from Walmart supports sub standard labor practices. Again you buy things with metals more than likely mined in substandard conditions, Pot meet kettle. For reference
So it is ok to call someone out for their habits/practices, not buy from them, criticize the business, as long as it doesn't affect your lifestyle... this is just one reason why we are called "Ugly Americans" by much of the world. Note: I am not judging anyone in this thread, but more hoping to provoke conversation and refine my own position on the issue. I would be violating my own principals if I told you what to do because it didnt fit my mores
I didnt realize that I had to come to this thread armed with 1000 pages of research to be allowed an opinion. I never said I wont buy anything from China or looked down on those who do. I only said that I try to look at other options when I can. Ivhave no problems buying a china made product if its quality, the best option for the job and not exploiting people. I dont like to support the cheap imitation knockoffs that flood the low end market and if I have te choice Id prefer to support jobs at home. I was also thinking about how Walmarts american workforce is paid. Maybe the newsbite we hear over and over that Walmart has more employees on welfare than any other company bothers me. Sue me. Im OUT.
You dont have to come with 1000's of pages of reasearch, but having facts to back up your position is good, espically when many dont believe the media, or think that the meida are misleading us for $$$'s or other reasons. Im just pointing out things others have said, and reiterating the things you have said earlier. What I am looking for in myself and others is consistency, not necessarily consistency, damm all else, but the ability to hold consistent to your ideals. Then the ability to examine those ideals when you find, or have someone else point out, inconsistencies. I am full of inconsistencies, but I am always seeking them out to refine, and eliminate, them within my own moral code, and I refuse to evaluate others based on my own moral code.
You sound like a smarta..fella, and you've obviously done some research and thinking on the subject, I'm sure you can figure it out for yourself
