Be patient; the weather hasn't turned yet... with the cold come the customers (and sometimes thieves too )
Some sweet splits there. Ill try and put the "seconds" aside and stack towards the top. How long will you dry HL before burning? I have a cord I CSS in July 2024 and am debating on whether to sell it this year or not? My two prior sales of it were three plus years dried. My main reason is to empty the rack to make room for fresh inventory.
I have burned it at 1 year before. This will all be 3+ stuff just by order of processing/stacking. Wasn't great nor terrible at 1 year. I do think it makes more ash than oak but probably just my brain making stuff up. I bet you could sell yours but I would mix it with some known cured wood until it hits 3 years.
I sold 3.5 year dried half cord last February. IIRC got a good price too as finding truly dry firewood in the latter half of burning season is not easy. Id like to move it (literally) as the rack needs some alterations. Its a 6'x16' stack. I used to stack three cord of barkless BL there and when that supply dried up and in a pinch I put this HL there instead.
I think I may give a day this weekend to a buddy if I can pry myself away from my own wood. He's behind as always but this year he has 10 or so acres of ground that was Timbered last winter to cut off of. Not being mean, but past few years he's gotten lazier and his pants size is showing that. He's aware and mentioned wanting to start to work firewood again like we used to do years ago because he needs the wood and also knows he needs to get more active again. (he had some medical issues that forced him to become slow moving over the course of a couple years and hasn't made it back yet to the level of physical activity that he did prior to) Thinking if I offer to go over and help him do some cutting I can help him kickstart himself back into action. I can't do it all for him, but maybe I can inspire some motivation.
I try to be for the few that I do still have. I've become far less social with age. Best to keep good care of remaining stock.
Same here. Wasn't much when I was younger. I've always been a loner anyhow. Seems I'm usually the friend who gives a lot more and wont say NO. Same applies to siblings. Not so of the friends I've made on FHC. If you're reading this you know who you are.
Always easier to help someone as long as they don't expect you to do it all. Good for you to get him kickstarted.
He's been working on converting an old shed building into a greenhouse lately. Gonna text him later and see if he has any time tomorow or Sunday afternoon. My plan is to go after limb wood and use his Ranger to haul it back to the shop in the bed. He desperately needs a wagon. For all the crap he has...no wagon for the buggy. He has some big wood laying already that didn't go to the mill, but bucking that stuff is too much like work compared to zipping and tossing branch rounds in the woods. Won't be anywhere near dry enough anyways.
I had such a fun time running my saw at Walt's last weekend that I believe I will saw some tomorrow. Just to have some more fun before going back to Florida.
Spent some time at my friend's Saturday. Ended up getting 5 loads out. The local flora made getting the rounds not near as easy as it should have been. This summer was a growing summer here. These tops were all laid down in February. The stuff that's been off the ground is mostly stove ready, as I had planned. He's got a lot of firewood there, but it's gonna rot if he don't get it out from the weeds and brush. I was pretty worn out when finished due to climbing through everything and tossing all those rounds. Did get some more splitting done of my stuff yesterday. Still a few rounds, 3, 10-15' logs, and a goober pile yet to do. I need to get stacking one night after work this week. Lying weather forecasts say supposed to be decent this week, if a little chilly in the mornings.
Yeah not fun with all those weeds and overgrowth. I have scores ill be hitting once the frost/freeze kills off the greenery. What do you do with the splitter scraps?
Was hard to get solid footing mostly due to stuff being all intertwined grown in at ground level or 6" off. This was some crossfit type scavenging. I'm not used to working that hard for it. They got bunged into a cardboard 'barrel' that my work gets chains shipped to us in and put in the shed. The HL makes a LOT of leavings, for whatever reasons. I have another cardboard boxful and a couple of feed sacks of stuff from earlier processing in there also. Forgot to mention I think a couple of bags of wood left the stand this weekend also.
I'll use an empty feed bag as I'm splitting and fill as I go. Problem is I generate a lot of them and am a bit overstocked with them. Friend of mine that buys BL likes them. Ill sometimes comp a new customer with one and others buy them with wood orders and smoker bundles. Speaking of bundles, how is the stand doing? My smoker bundle sales are non existent as of late.
I edited my post. Subtle signs of life at the woodstand this weekend. Not enough for me to restock and unknown if it was paid for yet or not (I don't get too excited about collecting).
