Shagged some Hickory

My coworker had a shagbark hickory come down last spring and several contacts of his wanted the wood but I think were intimidated by the size. I helped him out tonight. First time I have run the MS 261C since early June. I split some with the Fiskars and took a small amount. I will be going back to get allot more.

 

Amazing what some people don't feel like taking on.... That looks like goldilocks size to me! I'd go back for all I could get. Easy access with no schlepping to boot

 

That bark is crazy stuff, isn’t it? I’ve had chunks of it break off and hit me in the leg more than once when the chain starts into the cut. Can hurt a bit!!

 

I was just about to comment this exact thing. When the spinning chain hits the bark it hits me in the face every single time. It feels like rocks. Most bark is soft enough that the saw rips thru it. Hickory however seems to have very brittle bark.

 

Thats a prized score there. I often chuckle at what other hoarders wont touch due to size. Fresh cut hickory usually sections up somewhat easily IME. How was this one to split?

Are you running a 20" bar? My first 261 came with a 20" bar and I was surprised how well it ran with the bar fully buried. I later switched back to a 16" as the higher CC saws ran 20" minimum.

 

It split fairly easy but had it was sinuous. I have an 18” bar on the saw.

I enjoyed 2 pickup loads of shagbark hickory. It is something else, for sure!

Regarding the bark, there are recipes for making hickory syrup.

 

Those are great size rounds. Big enough to have a good yield, not so big that you gotta get a Singlet out to move them around.

I see some. There tends to be several together. This guy has another in his back yard.

Ax split hickory?! Hard and stringy I'd rather split elm. If it weren't for the high btu and the flavor for cooking I'd leave it.
My hat is off to anyone that knows its hickory and still reaches for a hand splitter
