Finally split and stacked the 8 big tree service rounds that have been inhabiting my small wood yard for a while. I had trimmed the rounds to 16" and broke up the resulting cookies for the neighbor lady two weeks or so back. I used the 180 Stihl to trim some knots on the rounds. Figure I got close to a half cord stacked in this side of the shed from those 8 rounds. Dennis Backwoods Savage .... I was not using the splitter vertical! I was unable to rotate the pictures to the proper horizontal configuration so it just appears vertical. The Wif cleaned all the chips and debris up and the yard is ready for more rounds now.
Nice to see you making firewood again as I'm sure it feels great to do so. Have the temps started to drop off a bit there? They have a little here. Any scores in the works?
Mostly in the 70's so pretty nice. Rain for Sat. and Sun. Since my area has implemented permits to take down trees, scores have slowed down. I have a couple leads and can always ask my tree service friend. I am fine for this year but will have to hustle next year to stay on the 3 year plan! As a last resort there are still two huge Doug Firs in my yard that I would like to see gone but that is expensive firewood!
How many splits did you get out of one of those rounds? It's 108 today so all I can do is read posts like this and dream
Good work. Once again I'm impressed and admire you guy firewood hoarders who live in what appears to be the suburbs with limited room and neighbors all around.
165ish large pie shaped splits so an average of 21-22 splits per round. I like them large for storage and break them down further as I wheel barrow them to the garage. .45 cords by measurement so between a face cord and a half cord. Almost all the wood was stacked criss cross in 4 tall towers. A good start!
Awesome. Always love your pics Russ. Great looking stacks. I love those rounds that produce so many splits. Just seems more productive to me.
Hey JDU it is getting harder and harder to find decent scores with all the tighter housing and now cutting permits. At least being retired I can move fast if a score comes up. Thanks The Wood Wolverine for the comments. Another plus is that many people are taking out larger trees that most can't handle. With the little crane on my trailer I can load larger rounds. The worst part is that I have to use the splitter vertical shhhhh! Don't tell Backwoods Savage to bust the big ones up.
