Or a little better. We have the 10 speed trans in our '21 7.3 F250. It has LT275/70R18 10 ply tires on it. Not towing, at freeway speeds, we can get 16+ mpg, pulling our 35' camper 8k#+ up to NW GA mountains last year, we got around 10, coming back down we got 13. We usually get pulling dump trailer with log loads.
Not yet, but it may be the one. It checks all the boxes. I have the green light to get it but I'm going to do a little more looking and thinking over the weekend. I know I only created the post a couple days ago but this has been several weeks in the making.
I have a 2024 F-250 XL Super Cab Short Box 4x4, 6.8L v8, 10 spd., 3.73 w/E-Locker, plow pkg., 5th wheel/gooseneck pkg., Offroad pkg. w/LT285/70R-17 tires, dual batt's/alts. I only need a 3/4 ton because I plow snow. If you get a 2024 F-250/350 with the exception of the Tremer models, they have a fake dummy non unlocking hub on the passenger side front axle. If you tell the dealer they make a grinding noise, they replace the dummy hub with the regular locking/unlocking hub and the needed vacuum lines. NYH1.
You really should check out a diesel. Much better that gas for towing. I have had many gas trucks over the years, one f350 7.3 diesel with my firewood business. The 2500 HD is really nice and it can pull our 14K lb 5th wheel nicely. Good luck with what ever you buy.
I'm not interested in an old truck or a modern diesel. I don't tow near as often or as heavy to justify the extra power and expense that comes with it. The gas 7.3 makes more torque than the 30 year old diesels did anyway.
The deal is all but done. Nothing left to do but write a check and pick it up. Should be able to do it this evening. Going to do some real basic "protection" stuff to it. Good floor mats, spray-in bedliner, roll up bed cover, and maybe PPF the billboard sized SUPER DUTY area on the hood...it looks like it was designed to pick up rock chips. It's already sitting right and has good rubber under it so there's really not much else to do.
It's not small. It's only 1" wider and 18" longer than the old truck. Probably at least 8" taller though. I drove it quite a bit this evening....in town...on the highway...down the back roads. The 4.30's and 10 speed combo is going to take some getting used to. I went up a decent hill in my neighborhood in 6th gear at ~20MPH barely above idle. It shifts into 10th at about 43MPH and happily idles down the road at 1,000 RPM. Feels like a big rig taking off from a stop with all the close shifting. Runs about 1,400 at 55 MPH, which is more than what I'm used to on the old truck...but it wouldn't pull the trailer easily in top gear either. I keep telling myself I didn't buy it for the MPGs. I'll hook up the trailer tomorrow evening and see what it's really working with, but I suspect 10K is going to be light weight for it. Too soon to tell if I made a good or bad decision, but it's too late so no sense in thinking about it anyway.
My neighbor has some high end suv with aftermarket exhaust on it...always cracks me up when they go down the road, with all that shifting going on. Kinda reminds me of when little kids act like they are driving truck and all they do is tev and shift the whole time....well, then ya gotta stop, so here comes the Jake!
