Raccoons pooping on the back of my woodshed

There is a cedar fence immediately behind my woodshed. The fence top rail and the shed are attached by a 3.5" cedar board laid flat about 10' long. The raccoons use the top of the fence for a pathway and poop all over the 3.5" board as a mailbox. When it rains some of the poop dribbles on the back row of wood. I decided to make some stainless steel critter spikes to put on the top rail of fencing and the 3.5" board. I hope this will shut the pathway and make it pain full to do any pooping. There are similar commercial spikes but they are expensive. I drew up a spike set and cut out a prototype. Sticky sharp! Will refine my bending on the final product. Hope this works.

 

There are similar on the market to keep pigeons and seagulls off roofs etc.

That should do it. I'm no fan of raccoons - they are nasty and destructive.

 

I sure as heck wouldn't wanna try pooping on that!!!

I never realized how nimble and acrobatic raccoons are until I witnissed it firsthand.

Years back I encountered one on a roof that was sleeping under and overhang. I spooked it out as I had work to do. It almost fell off the roof, but righted itself on the rain gutter and made its way to the ladder then proceeds to climb down face first. I stood totally astonished watching it climb down one rung at a time two stories up. Later while working I saw it scoot across another section of the roof amazed again as it was steeper than 45* and moss covered tile.

If the wood from that stack burns like chit you'll know why!!!

The motion sensing floodlight didn't phase it in the least.

Fortunately, they're rare to see on the property.

 

I had a couple on the back deck during the first winter here. The bird feeder was the reason for their visits.

Then, they dug underneath the deck and took up a brief residence. I didn't want any birthing to go on so I began the harassment and eviction phase of the squatter.

I would wait until they (she?) was on the deck and then scare them off and fill in the burrow hole that led under the deck. after a few times of that.....and placing rocks/debris in the burrow hole before filling back in.....they got the message.

 

My option as well

 

I know what you mean. I have those also but can't use them since it has grown up so much around here. I do have a Beeman .22 air rifle that would work in the right circumstance. Might have to put it out!

Racoons had babies in my attic last year...Too bad those cute little f'ers couldn't swim!

 

Probably kinda hard when they're still in the live trap.

 

In the past I've put up with mouse poop on my firewood (under that circumstance it goes from directly outside right into the stove, skipping the usual 1-3 day wait in my indoor wood rack). A couple of times even my dog decided to pee on the ends of my firewood as he walked by it. C'mon man... But dripping raccoon poop is where I'd draw the line too. Who knows what kind of nasty stuff is in their waste. I really like your solution. God help the critter that decides to run the gauntlet trying to use his favorite pooping spot again

 

My SIL uses that method for chipmunks.

 

Went into production on critter spikes. Now have 6@3 ft long. Painted and eventually mounted. There is one picture of the partially cleaned back shelf.
Also bought 2 large canisters of cayenne pepper to sprinkle as a further deterrent. The checker at the restaurant supply place said "Wow, you must like spicy food". I said "No, I just hate raccoons". That got me a weird look! I find my self hoping to hear screeching, squalling and great commotion in the night at the woodshed!
