They're ceramic and it's in a local school administration building. They're gonna get some newer style vinyl/rubber "tiles". 12"x24" or bigger. Not sure. Just seen them this morning and didn't have a tape or look at the box too close. I'll try to remember a finished picture.

I've had my hummingbird feeders out for a month a half, maybe longer. We had hummers at them within a week. I file the hummingbird migration tracker, and always have the feeders out before they get here.

Neat, I'd like to see it finished if you remember :) I wonder if the 12x24 goes down quickly or difficult.

I looked at those (online, not in person) and like some things about it (primarily the size...it's a small footprint for storage). For that price though, not having a hydraulic log lift dropped it out of the running. Plus I saw a review somewhere where someone said the refueling process is a PITA because the fuel tank is under the table requiring a funnel to be used. LogOx has teamed up with another company to make an add-on for a (somewhat bizarre) "Dan-D-Lift" manual log lift, but again no thanks (especially when the manual log lift costs another $850.00!).

Ah, the dreaded black bear apprehension that the average person has (this is not regarding anyone on this forum, I just hear this all the time since I live in bear country). I can understand the concern over a black bear regarding pets/livestock, and I keep an eye out for them because I don’t want my shepherd to get into an altercation (in addition to not wanting them to damage property after I had one rip the doors off my shed last year). What I don’t understand is the fear that the average person has about black bears. I’m in NH and I hear it every year from hikers who are scared to death of black bears and carry bear spray, or wear bells on their clothing/packs. I understand that for people who aren’t used to being in bear country, there can be an inherent fear of the unknown, yet in reality a study was done that showed a hiker is about 60,000 times more likely to be killed by another person out in the woods than by a black bear. However, there is little no fear about encountering other people on the trails but almost an obsession over ‘bear encounters’ here in the White Mountains the last several years.

I was born and raised in NH, and I don't recall ever hearing of a hiker being attacked by a black bear. Black bears have taken backpacks with food, torn down tents looking for food (sometimes with people inside of the tent), broken into vehicles at the trailhead, etc., but there is no documented black bear attack against a hiker on record that I am aware of in NH (against the actual hiker, not a food source). For reference, there have only been just over 80 documented fatal black bear attacks in all of North America...ever...period (at least since the late 1700’s when records started being kept). When you consider the millions of people who have ventured into the woods, a person is astronomically more likely to be injured while driving to/from the trailhead or having some other type of hiking injury/death than by any encounter with a black bear. Another pseudo-myth is that of sows with cubs. While any animal is likely to be more dangerous when the instinct to protect their young comes into play, there is NO record of anyone being killed by a mother black bear defending her cubs. Overall, the roughly 750,000 black bears of North America kill less than one person per year on the average. Black bears are opportunistic omnivores and curious, so if a person is out in the woods and feeling ‘stalked’ by a bear, they are more than likely just curious about whatever food (or equally enticing smell) that person has in their pack (which a bear can smell from a long way off) and have no intent on doing any harm to the hiker.

Ironically enough, the very first documented fatality caused by a black bear was in New Hampshire...of course that was back in 1784, and it was not out in the woods, it was in a field (an 8-year-old child in Moultonborough). There has been only one other fatality caused by a black bear in NH, in 1952, however that was a captive bear in Crawford Notch that killed its feeder when the person entered the bear's cage. By far, almost all injuries to people from black bears happen in urban areas (a bear in a dumpster, a bear in a house, a bear in a yard, etc.) and not out in the woods. I've encountered many black bears in the woods of NH over the last 60 years, some up fairly close, and have rarely ever been remotely concerned about being attacked. I've had up to seven bears around my tree stand at one time and just watched the show with no real concern that they would come after me. I wish people that plan on going in the woods would take the time to learn about black bears (from academic sources, not from social media or the over-hyped news media that portrays every bear encounter as an ‘attack’) and they will learn that encountering a black bear in the woods is not something to be feared (respected, as they are after all a wild animal, but not feared). Brown bears and polar bears, well that's obviously a different story.

Gave the lawn another dose of herbicide this morning. I like to it when there's a heavy dew so I can see my tire tracks.

Summer is arriving today...high of 85. The AC in the new shop is going to be nice this year.

More fun stuffs today but forgot pictures. Poured about 7 yards of concrete this morning. Then more tile tear out and grinding of the mortar that was left behind on the concrete. I get to look forward to doing some more grinding in the am. Only got about half done today.

But-but they are bears! isn't killing what bears do? People see what those bears do up in Alaska and other places. And just because they sometimes have a black coat rather than brown, what does that mean. Dogs come in different colors too. And on and on.
