That's a rather ancient looking bathroom.

Read 56 pages of this book on lunch break. Got home and had to finish the rest of 200+ pages before I slept.

Though the tragedy, and then the miracle, was headline news for several days, author Gary Collins, of Hare Bay, does a fantastic job of telling, in detail, the true story of seven fishermen who had to abandon their 55' vessel after it caught fire 130 knots from land in July 2024.
A dense fog persisted for two days afterwards, meaning the seven people, in an inflatable raft no bigger than a small car, heard chopper blades overhead several times, fired flares which the helicopter crew could not see, and then heard the blades fly away again. The helicopter had, at their own risk, flown as low as 100 feet. There was at least one more aircraft searching, as well as several ships, but in that fog, they could hardly see their hand in front of their face.

It's a tough feeling to imagine for those of us who haven't experienced it. By comparison, the Titanic's survivors waited a couple hours for rescue. Two days, or to be more precise, about 52 hours, had to feel like eternity in that little raft. Though it was hard to get any sense of direction in that fog, the captain's instincts told him they were drifting away from land, rather than toward it. (And, it was later discovered, he was right). He didn't, however, say as much to the others. Embers had burned holes in the raft's roof, which leaked when it rained. But on that note, it's fortunate enough that the raft wasn't engulfed along with the boat.
The seven of them hardly had room to move at all. Two had not even been able to put on survival suits, and were close to, if not in the earliest stages of, hypothermia by the end of the ordeal. The lack of a bathroom was something they tried not to talk about.

When they were nearly at their limit of endurance, the fog finally started to clear. The helicopter returned, and the captain, who had been waiting for the right moment, fired their last flare. The crew watched in despair for a long moment as it seemed to fly away, but it was turning around to deploy it's search and rescue crew. The captain in the raft took no chances and signaled SOS with a flashlight. The chopper responded in kind.

Needless to say, it was an agonizing wait for their friends and family ashore. Some had given up all hope. When the coast guard vessel carrying them home approached their home port of Valleyfield, most of the region's population was waiting dockside. A few even went out in boats to greet them, and they came ashore to a hero's welcome.

The book almost reads like a novel. I say that as a compliment to Gary's writing. Almost, but you don't forget that it's a true story. And the "Lucky Seven" is a true story that this island, and especially the part of it known as the Kittiwake Coast, Won't forget anytime soon.

Headed to the 80's today and 90's next week. Guess the AC will probably get turned on. We've been loving this extended spring weather.

Clothes washer officially dead. Load that was in there was locked til this morning when I got the correct sequence of trail and error. It's out and the smell turns my stomach.

Idk, guess ask kiddo to put the heavy wet laundry basket on the porch when she gets home to dry them out, these are good clothes we wear a lot.

Newtown is sometimes called the Venice of Newfoundland. Very unique place, though also potentially vulnerable to bad storms.
