Been meaning to start my annual “march to whatever” thread for a while now and figured I would change the name up. Anyway, had an extremely busy winter making deliveries when I’m usually busy skiing and starting to process wood for the next season. Here is where things stand the first few days in May. I feel like I am way behind here I’ve been at this point the last few years. I also don’t have many nice size logs to process. There is a lot of 36”+ diameter stuff which just eats up time. Have had some nice weather recently so I’ve been hitting it pretty good this past week. Let’s see what I can get done between now and fall. I also included a selfie on my way home from making a delivery this morning. Since people couldn’t get seasoned wood at the end of winter this year, they have been reaching out early to make sure they are stocked up.
And to think, folks are always after me for having so much firewood. I agree that it always seems to take so much longer handling the big stuff plus it is harder on the body. But just keep on plugging along and it gets done. When you get to my age, things go much slower...
Years ago my son had a friend over. He asked if they could have some firewood, the reason being ‘because I have so much’. I knew the family fairly well, like many dads he had a full time job. I do like making firewood, but don’t mind going fishing or riding the motorcycle, etc.. I know many that are much more likely to be out having fun rather than making firewood.
Tough call between making wood and selling it working alone sometimes.. Technically you're getting paid all the time but the delivery puts the physical cash in hand of course. Looks like you have a decent amount of logs on hand. Are you buying any loads of those nice Goldilocks logs from that guy? Those were some sweet loads. With the bad Winter Im way behind on inventory rebuild. I have a few folks lined up for Spring delivery of green wood as long as I can fill the orders. A couple regulars that I convinced to take a load and dry it themselves as they have room. A steady regular supply my main issue. Best of luck Joe, keep up the hard work and most importantly work safe. Ill be following this thread intently as I enjoy watching your hoard grow.
Always have enjoyed seeing your yearly thread! Any trouble finding logs? Seems tree services around me process their own logs into firewood. One I heard finally gave up. Couldn’t make any money at it.
Did you sell out this year? Looks like you are making a good start, the bigger rounds do take time, but produce a lot of splits. Any problems getting help this year? Good luck and work safe, brother
Eh, not really enough logs to keep me going too long now that I have gotten back fully into the swing of cutting and splitting. There's maybe 4-5 weeks of material there to process if other wood doesn't come in and other work doesn't pop up. It is mulching season so I will have some jobs with that and I have 2 splitting jobs at people's homes. As for the Goldilocks logs from the land clearing guy, I have reached out 2 times in the last 6 weeks or so and he tells me he has been working on pine jobs but he will keep me in mind.
I have reached out to a few people about logs on a large scale without much luck yet. One guy has plenty but I need to unload the semi. Don't think the JD1070 is up to that task. haha
Updated pics on the two oak piles currently in progress. The bigger rounds are at the tw6 and the smaller rounds which get picked up are at the iron and oak.
I was originally hoping to be done with all of these logs by the time school got out…well I have until Thursday to get them all cut. Think I’m going to fall short but not by much.
You’re way ahead of me. I would have had a lot more done if it wasn’t for the heat was we had. That took it right out of me. I’d split half the night if I had the yard light put back up. “Gotta fix that, one of these days”-Pa Kettle NICE progress!
IF you like 30-36" diameter logs, yes. They are straight and mostly knot free. Will put the 36" bar on the saw for them and then either noodle in half or quarters as they will exceed the 500 pound rated lift on the spitter.
