That was my thinking on the metal detector idea. Most of the cheap ones only go a few inches. Best I've seen was 4.5 but who knows how accurate that spec is. Even the more expensive ones only go 6-8". I bought a few cheap chains and going try and revive the BRAND NEW STIHL CHAIN At least I know where one is As mentioned the scary part is I have a few more logs with signs of metal Good news is I am almost through it all and have my parking spot back in front of the house
The bigger the piece of metal, the easier it is to detect, and the deeper the metal detector can find it. The closer the piece of metal is to the bark, the easier it is to detect. Small screws or nails deep in a tree will be hard to find for any detector. Unless you use a portable x-ray machine.
That's enough to make a grown hoarder cry! Full skip chain I hope? The rare occasion the 36" bar comes out for me I use full skip.

I found one of those also a few years back. Living in a neigborhood comes the risk of things like that when people take these trees down. I can't tell you how many nails I've sliced through, I learned how to hand sharpen 40+ years ago just because of that reason.
I bought one of those blades for my Stilh saw and did not even hit anything serious lost 5-7 tips and as we know no returns.
I'd almost invest in one if I knew how deep it would pick up into wood. I suppose I can write/e-mail them and see if they have an answer... I've screwed up a few chains up in past years, as I'm sure many of us have...
She's all done and off the street! Amazingly I didn't blow out another chain despite having a few extra on hand. I was really careful and took my time and it paid off. Now the fun part, splitting and stacking it. I already started making room in the big wood shed and on another rack by moving a bunch of dried oak to my primary wood shed used during burning seasoning close to the house. I think I will run out of room, but I have a few ideas.
