Any ideas as to what species I'm dealing with here? There was 1 log of this in the entire load. I thought it was a softer wood so I thought splitting would be easy and quick. Wrong! Super stringy and honestly a total pain in the butt. I didn't take a picture of a split, but the splits are blonder/pale in color with some redder fibers in the middle core. I thought this could potentially be Elm but I don't know. The bark has a unique scaly pattern.
Beech. Great firewwod, but can be a PITA to split. Normally not scaly, but smooth. Thinking the cracking maybe a result of beech bark disease
Glad to help. I was moving some splits today that happened to be beech. Similar cracking. CSS last Fall. One split looked as though the bark was "melting". Very unusual!
I kind of forgot that I had an active Chip Drop request for logs. Turns out I might have a guy coming tomorrow with a load of maple, though I'm actually trying to get him to drop it to a buddy's house in need of wood. I felt like I had to boogie today and make some space for another drop just in case he says he can't drop at the buddy's house. Couple observations: 1) a brand-new saw chain makes life so sweet. I could've done that with one arm tied behind my back and both eyes on my sandwich. 2) my new favorite tool for these huge log jobs is a post hole digger bar. Yes a new chain is sweet. Seems if I want to find metal in a log all I have to do is put on a new chain! I own the same bar and yes it is sweet for prying/moving logs. Have you ever used a peavey or cant hook? Game changing tool in the firewooders aresenal. Indispensable for rolling logs. And the ibuprofen certainly comes in handy too. I have a scrip for 800mgs.
I'm aware of these tools but have never used one. Any particular brand or retailer you'd recommend? When I lived in Pennsylvania, I feel like this was something I could find at a Saturday yard sale. Hardly ever see yard sales in Massachusetts.
I was gifted a new one from Tractor supply years back. buzz-saw gave me another he made from scratch. A work of art that works made mostly of aluminum. Might be able to find a used one at tag sales or flea markets. Facebook marketplace/Craig's list might have them too.

Ibuprofen only. Im well aware of the risks. My late mother had issues from it as did an old neighbor. Ill take as needed and with food. My doctor had me start with 3x a day back in 2019 for back/disc issues. Soon there after I took only as needed. If I take 2-3 weekly its a lot, I try not too depend on it, but the way I make firewood.
Logrite or Stihl which is a rebranded Logrite painted a different color. They are awesome and you will never need another one.
Yeah, that's some work all right! A cant hook/ peavey is a great tool, necessary to bring out when bucking from a pile of logs. Mine is like this but blue metal, but my dad bought it decades ago and I swear it was only 50-60 bucks.
