Do we all know about Hurley, Wisconsin, the reputation? You may think I’m unhinged, but after cutting a good amount of firewood I often feel like a drink. I’m not even sure of the association.

Today I did a fair amount of firewood work, when done ended up with a beer.

    This reputation?

Hurley, Wisconsin, has a reputation as a historic, rugged Northwoods town with a "tough" past, often compared to a mining-era town like Deadwood due to its history of saloons, gambling, and vice.

Ahh hurley. Well aware, but most of WI is the same way. Aside from the extra debauchery Hurley is said to provide.

Wisconsinites are banned from drinking competitions in Mexico, Florida, islands in the Caribbean etc, for a reason. We'll drink y'all under the table.

It was pretty much a typical lawless (just about) small town with gambling, prostitution, corruption, free flowing alcohol-yes, even during prohibition. Fighting was common.

I was told that the old style heating radiators and connecting plumbing used to be filled with alcohol during prohibition. This was the hiding spot for it during the raids looking for booze. Also, rumors have it that some establishments were connected by "secret" underground tunnels that were below basements to allow for quick unscheduled departures.

Wasn't uncommon for members of the "mob" to frequent and or sponsor and control hurley.
