Brad, how does cottonwood burn, what do you do with it? I've never gone after cottonwood, I thought it was no good, but it grows prolifically in a certain area around here, a river bottom floodplain.

What do you do with slab wood?

The last 2-3 years was my first time taking large amounts of CW. I had a stack undercover with no sun and to my amazement it dried nicely despite this in 6-8 months. The splits are really light when dried. I never put a moisture meter to it. The wood bundles I wholesale are "diluted" with a piece when its dried. I cut a half cords around Labor day and that was stacked in a sunny location, This has been used up. Aother half cord cut mid October is being used up now.

This current batch came in at a perfect time as I'm trying to restock bundle wood. The deep snow here set me back many cords as I wasn't able to put up fresh inventory. Even today I noticed a weight difference in Saturdays splits and todays fresh splits.

An FHC member says he can get it under 20% MC in less than a month once CSS. A couple other FHCers use cottonwood as their main burning wood..

Burns fast and leaves a lot of ash from what I've been told. Burns better than snowballs is a common saying here too.

With all the better woods you have I wouldn't waste my time with it unless you wanna try some for the hell of it. I don't want a lot, but a half cords every four months or so to keep the inventory up would be nice.

Between cottonwood and tulip poplar I don't know what dries faster. I split some tulip poplar 2 weeks ago and I sh_t you not, picking up the pieces this morning (the ones with no bark) are feather light and I'm positive would burn.

That load of tulip I got two weeks ago doesn't seem to be drying as fast. Stacked so it gets good wind and sun. The logs were from last August. How fresh cut were yours?

Between this cut and the TP I got from Milford I'm close to two cords. I have another load in Milford plus your tree so I'll be set in the near future. Just gotta score some medium btu woods (ideally red maple and cherry) to stockpile as well. Ill mix in denser woods (mostly sugar maple) when scored.

Got the last of the rounds yesterday. Still unsure if I'll raid the burn pile for the milling scrap. DSCF0755.JPG

Maybe I missed it. Do you know what they’re milling the cottonwood for?

They sell it for knife/hatchet throwing targets. They have a couple big slabs 8" thick by 3-4' wide that were recently CSM. Not sure what those will be sold for. Most of what they mill are softwoods for pallets companies from what he told me. Lots of EWP in their log pile. They were milling white cedar the other day.

Yeah those axe throwing bars were all the rage at one time. Guess they still are. I’m surprised the state hasn’t banned something like that, people may be having fun.

I'm not sure what the "hybrid" is exactly, but I've been burning some Hybrid poplar from trees that I planted in the back 20+ years ago...it was CSS'd all last summer, and while it's all dry, some of the pieces are surprisingly heavy!
Working good for SS wood...mixing it with somewhat punky red oak sapwood splits...that burns faster than the poplar!
