I really relate to this post.. If better health wise I would drop snow blower off Kubota and get some tree length to processing area or split some round but with 6” of snow on ground and my abilities I watch others on FHC do it
I can relate. There is blow down ash in my neighbor's woods within sight of my house. 6 weeks! Can't wait.
My body gives me enough MikeInMa has met me.. I know of 6 on my property or neighbors that are on the list after this winter
Mixed load of barkless elm, mulberry and Black locust from my "Unlimited Supply" cut. he had the burn pile going hence the smoke. Unfortunately I was cutting downwind from it.
A little wood moving today. Stacked the mulberry. Almost a full rack making a half cord. Need another Eric Wanderweg sized score to top it off. Been slowly moving the ash heartwood next door to bundle storage. Should be ready by Memorial day. Trying something new for better air movement. 2x4 sleepers with 1x3 furring strips across making an air space under the stack. More ash, dead maple and elm to be moved.
Geeze I don’t know, Brad. You may need a couple of my-size scores to finish off that rack. They seem to be getting smaller and smaller as of late
Today's cut. Spied this sassafras top back in the Fall. Wet day with a heavy drizzle didn't stop me. The lower part was hollow with ant damage. Seems sassy is the most loved wood by ants in these parts. Started at the top until I hit the break/rot. Pics when I left. Caught myself sniffing splits. One of my favorite wood smells. Splits very easily. Finished a half cord stack of general cordage with elm and dead maple from last week. Ill move more bundle wood tomorrow. Planning on cutting more dead ash.
Yesterdays cut. Second load of dead ash from that score. 24" diameter logs bucked off the first tree. Of course new chain (second cutting) and I hit a nail on the last round bucked off that trunk. Started from the top of the second tree to fill the truck. Split the entire load after. What's left. Not sure when I'll hit it again...soon though. At least one full load left.
Moved more ash heartwood splits to bundle storage and stacked. Lots more to be moved. Unexpected great score today! Passed a tree crew working a job down the street from my house. Quick U turn, chat with boss in bucket truck, and got the okay to take. Come back at days end and cut. For this Goldilocks cherry I wasn't missing it. In an hour I bucked a PU full. It was to be chipped! Turns out I met him before doing a job a couple years ago. Got his number and will call to see if he can be a future source for free wood.
He was just going up in the bucket when I pulled in and saw the cherries. was my reaction. They had already taken down a couple other trees. One was a nice medium oak which got chipped. Im hoping it splits nice and straight. Hit or twist with cherry as you know. Either way I'm stoked. Most will go for bundle inventory. Some heartwood for smoking inventory. Finally got in touch with the guy from the orchard clearing company. Gonna meet up this week and see what he's got for me at his yard. Sells mulch and compost from what he told me.
Well I agree with Eric. Those logs are so straight,,,,,it being spring fever season and all,,,,, you should’ve hoisted a couple on the truck for the sawmill LOL That is a sweet score.
The thought of milling logs crossed my mind, but they had to go right away. Once milled into a square block there wasn't much meat left plus the heartwood wasn't that "red". IME it can vary greatly.
Just bustin ya chops. Yeah I’ve seen great variations in color even from the same tree if it’s big enough. Age changes the patina anyway. Staircase and railings on the loft in my house were all made from one huge tree. There’s considerable variations to be seen.
