In the name of progress, the state has decided these 3 trees need to come down. An oak, a dead small ash, and a maple, I believe. I'll keep the trunks and happy to be a recipient of any others they care to donate. A 3yr rebuild of the state highway is in its beginning stages. Working on a backup flag mount option.
Well that sucks but at least they're going to pay to take them down and you get to keep the trunks for firewood.
At least you'll get something outta the deal. Bet it don't offset the frustration to come though. 3 years?!?!?
Not looking forward to it. New traffic lights at intersections Reworked intersections with turning lanes. New culvert and storm drains A 2 mile multi use path to nowhere. Fancy bike lane. We no longer "own" the bottom of our driveway. The state has a "temporary easement" of 120sqft. They paid us for it. So not looking forward to dust and incessant beeping of equipment. Life happens. Adapt and overcome.
MikeInMa maybe you can catch someone working and ask if they can leave that stem above the flag. Or just leave the flag and spray a line all the way around the stem at the height you want it left. There was a guy around here that did that. 2 big pines next to a barn on either side of the sliding doors. They were left about equal to the eaves height. Maybe he's gonna have them carved? I always thought that would be cool with some stems. damm bike paths!!! Don't get me started on that topic.
I'm OK with coming up with another way to display the flag. Not a problem, just move it to the other side of driveway. Besides, the trees and part of stone wall are on state property.
A couple years ago the county clearcut trees in the highway right of way. A lot of the trees were chipped and blown back to where they were cutting. I got quite a few logs for firewood and some of my neighbors got some as well. It was in preparation for redoing the road. I was told they didn't want tall trees coming down over the road. The road was last redone back in the mid 60's so it was time. It was a mess and a bit noisy for a summer but it is now done and a lot smoother than it was.
Good luck Mike. It may get noisy and dusty for a while but it will end. Just hope traffic doesn't increase after the road is completed.
We've been here since '82. This state highway is the main east/west road in this part of Mass. Including, being a feeder road to interstate rt495. Traffic has increased over time. No reason to think it won't continue to increase. It is what it is. No sense worrying about that which you have no control.
Different angle. The whole top rotates. There's floodlights off each corner. They shine on our house windows, all night long. We're looking forward to leaf-out.
Cant blame you for being upset about the construction and the BS that goes with it plus the forthcoming traffic. Is there any more marked trees in the area they could leave for you?
There are some logs piled up, on state property, aways back from the road. I'll ask them, if I get the chance .
Pro tip, if there any other trees you want down, put your own pink X on them. The tree companies usually don't know any different and will take them down. This has worked for me and a BIL in South Jersey. My BIL even marked trees that were not in the right of way and had them taken down.
